Community of Practice: A group of instructors who “interact, share, and participate in a particular cultural practice over time, [and who then] develop their understanding about the practice, about who they are, and about what they know in relation to the community and its goals” (Jiminez-Silva & Olsen, 2012, p. 335).

We have created a space for a community of practice and care that supports FRM instructors to navigate the integration of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in their teaching.

Time Commitment: Approximately monthly for 60 minutes, but we will be flexible. In the first meeting we decided to offer a Monday and a Friday offering each month.

Format: Virtual, synchronous; low-stakes, collaborative series of semi-structured supportive conversations. Any further decisions regarding format and preparation (e.g., pre-readings, reflections, etc.) to be determined by participants.

Participants: FRM instructors interested in the integration of principles of EDI in teaching and learning

Meeting Topic - EDI & Case Studies

In our upcoming meeting we will have some dialogue about case studies - developing case studies thoughtfully that are inclusive and diverse; non-tokenistic or essentializing; address topics such as racism, SES, bias; and encourage student to consider taken-for-granted assumptions.

Below are a few reflective questions to consider prior to the meeting:

What strategies have you used to integrate topics around EDI in your case studies in your course(s)? What challenges did you face?
What barriers have you encountered when attempting to create case studies that integrate topics related to EDI?
What resources do you use, or need, to help integrate EDI topics in case studies?

Article: Case studies and critical disability studies

I've found this paper quite useful for thinking about disability discourses - and there is nice set of questions (not only focused on disability) to use when making case studies (table 1 on page 271).
