I still struggle to interrupt these “everyday” moments of antifatness when I see them. I’m afraid of being “too much.” But it is something I’m working on. We noticed their disabilities and in reaction laughed and ran away from them, calling them the r word between ourselves. Ableism looked like assuming disabled students were undesirable or unworthy, not as human as myself.

As an adult I work with and develop goals for students whose disabilities impact their access to education. I’ve worked on “social skills” with autistic students, for example, which essentially seeks to make them present more “normal” and neurotypical vs understanding, learning more about, and affirming their unique needs and abilities. This “trainings of social skills that really is just a minimizing of autistic presentation is an approach I am seeking to interrogate and unlearn now to replace with neurodiversity affirming practices. In this case, ableism looks like contorting disability to look more like “abled” bodies.
