I was unable to attend the class this week. I knew i couldn't attend it awhile back ago and emailed our instructor, Dr. S, a few days before the coming day. Out of sheer luck, the class was cancelled. Technically, I will not miss the first day of class and so, I flew to Indonesia with the excited anticipation of attending my first class the very next week.

Introductions

The first day of class. Like any other first days of anything, I arrived early. The building which held the classroom stood tall. So very tall because our classroom was at the top floor. And so, with great determination, I climbed up the several flights of stairs. Upon reaching the top, I was met with one of my soon to be classmates. She was from China. It was my first time communicating with someone from China and I found it very interesting. More and more of my classmates soon arrived. I saw a couple of familiar faces and several new ones. Not long after that, our instructor arrived and we all nervously entered the classroom. After settling in, we had our introductions. We had a good time getting to know one another. There was actually no need for me or any of us to be nervous about because our instructor, Dr. S, is actually very cool. We had some introductions of the course and what was expected from us. She also emphasized us to each have our own teaching philosophy. I’d have to say, i was beginning to like the class. Attached below is our timetable for this course.

Curriculum

Classes for this course begin at 3pm on Thursdays and I travel by car from Seremban to arrive to the class. Similar to last week, I prepare my mind and body for an hour’s drive. Upon arriving to the classroom, I find most of my classmates had arrived including Dr. Siti. I took a seat i felt most comfortable in and began to listen. I was still unsure of the number of classmates as it was only the second week. But overall, there were not more than 10 of us which I feel is a good instructor to student ratio. Dr. Siti started off with sharing some definitions of curriculum. She asked for us to give our definitions of curriculum which we gave vague ideas of it. There were many definitions and most were correct. Then, Dr. S shared the many definitions and types of curriculum. She asked us to share our experience if we had any about our curriculums in any educational institution. I was mostly silent. The two people who contributed the most were Y and M. I suppose I haven’t really warm up to everyone for me to feel comfortable enough to say anything. I silently reflected on the curriculums i had gone through up until now. To be honest, when i was a student, i was oblivious to such things, but now, as a student undertaking the masters in education program specializing in curriculum development, I realize i must think of ways that i can contribute to our education system though I’m not exactly sure what yet.

Education 4.0

Today i looked around the classroom at my classmates. There are seven of us in total. I smiled to myself feeling satisfied with the small number. The topic for discussion today was Education 4.0. It’s to my understanding that our education system is going through a transformation which is needed to meet the demands of the current global trend. The world has come to the fourth industrial revolution which focuses on automous cyber systems. This revolution has passed its infancy phase, just ended its childhood and is experiencing its teenage years where it has just started to develop its own identity and personality, occasionally being helpful while sometimes being disruptive. It’s to my belief that this revolution needs more time to be understood so it could be better implemented into our curriculums. This will help us to prepare the students for the advanced technological world.

Assured, Bloom's and Revised Bloom's

For today's class Dr. S shared with some educational taxonomies. The first one is Assure. It was the first time I heard about the model. It stands for analyse learners, state objectives, select/modify/design materials, utilize materials, require learner response, and. It’s a very good model to plan a lesson or even to design a curriculum. Next, she shared with us the well-known Bloom's Taxonomy. The last one was the Revised Taxonomy. These two are familiar to me as I also did an Education course for my Bachelor’s degree. This taxonomy is more suitable to create learning objectives. Before the class ended, I asked about the three assignments for thise course. Since I am unfamiliar with the Assure model I will upload some details of it as below. As Dr. S mentioned, if we are planning to develop a curriculum model, the Assure model is the best model to be implemented.

I wasn't quite sure what i missed the first 45 minutes of the class, but when I entered, Dr. S was explaining about the integration of new technology into the curriculum. Upholding to the 21st Century Pedagogical Skills, educators are required to integrate technology in innovative and creative ways. Educators need to use 4.0 Teaching and Learning skills such and flipped classrooms, augmented reality and others. Honestly, I'm overwhelmed thinking about the vast ways teaching and learning will be altered with the emerging technologies

This week we did an online class in Spectrum V1. These are the questions and my answers to the questions:

1. What is the key characteristics of smart learning?

Smart learning can be two things. The first is the usage of technology in learning such as the use of laptops and tablets to facilitate learning. The second is the acronym SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely). This means that learning is narrowed down to the topic of learning, can be quantitatively measured, can be achieved, the topics are related to the subject matter and can be achieved within the time allocated

2. How to overcome the challenges when designing smart learning environments?

Educators may use the ABCD model. The audience or the learners is the main focus. Educators need to assess their learners before designing a smart learning environment. For example, if learners are well equipped with the use of various technology, laptops, tablets, etc, then teachers can design their lesson without holding back on the use of technology. For behavior, teachers must design learning activities than can be done within the learner's capability. For condition, teachers must specify the tools that may or may not assist the behavior. For degree, teachers must allocate the minimum criteria for acceptable student performance.

3. How do you define success learning?what does it mean to you?

My definition of success learning is learning through temporal experience; past experience, present experience and future experience. For past experience, I learn from others that have experienced knowledge in the past. For example, I read reference books to get the basic idea of knowledge. For the present, I apply the many past experiences with the current knowledge that I am learning. For example, i wish to learn how to bake a chocolate cake and i use the basic recipes and ingredients of cake making and end up successfully baking a basic chocolate cake. Lastly, future experience means that i use the basic knowledge to bake an even better chocolate cake such as by adding nuts or even coconut. In short, my definition of success learning is learning through temporal experience by doing, making mistakes and amending the mistakes I've made.

4. List five differences between traditional instructional designs with systematic instructional design.

The traditional instructional design (TID) and the systematic instructional design (SID) will be contrasted based on five aspects which are objectives, learning mediums and tools, learning strategy, evaluation and revision. The objectives of TID are stated as teachers' achievement while the objectives of SID are based on students' achievement. The learning medium and tools for TID are chosen without knowledge of its effectiveness while the learning medium and tools for SID are chosen with knowledge of its effectiveness. The learning strategy for TID is chosen based on preference while the learning strategy for SID is chosen to meet with the objectives. The assessment and evaluation for TID are rarely conducted while the assessment and evaluation for SID are systematically conducted.

"suum cuique" translated as "to each his or her own"

Early in the beginning of the school year, a teacher gives each of her students a handful of sunflower seeds. She explains the many benefits of the seeds but she does not tell them their functions. The teacher then gives the students the freedom to come up with an end product of the uses of the seeds. Each student may use the seeds for different purposes. By the end of the the school year, each student presented many wonderful ideas of how they had used the seeds. One student planted the seeds, grew sunflowers, dried the petals and made pressed-flowers bookmarks. Another student had baked the seeds and made them into delicious energy bars. Another student had written a narrative story about the seeds and made them into magical wish-granting sunflowers. The teacher was so proud of her students because each of them were able to expressed his or her own ability.
