The quake occurred beneath the Pacific Ocean, 100 miles off the coast of Chile (Western South America). The ground tremors destroyed thousands of buildings. The earthquake was reported to have been preceded by a powerful fore-shock, which acted as a warning for millions of citizens. The cost of the damage that displaced over 2,000,000 people is estimated to be around $6 billion USD, adjusted to today's currency.

Aid efforts cannot always fulfill the tasks at hand to help people recover from earthquakes. Sometimes the governments of certain countries are forced to spend only 1% (for example) of the GDP on natural disaster aid. Thus, the national hospitals are unable to cope with the mass amounts of injury from these natural disasters.

The Chilean government implemented a new emergency alert technology, although this was due to an earthquake in 2010. The system uses a geographically-targeted area to allow officials to send mass alerts to citizens, whether it be on a computer, television, radio or mobile phone. Technology like this was not as advanced in the 1960's, but could save more lives as time goes on.
