Prospero set out to see in a small boat with his daughter. They left because he was the duke until his brother Antonio betrayed him. Prospero is interested in books and reading along with he knows how to use magic. On the Island, Prospero used magic to control the spirits on the Island. Prospero also helps Ariel escape as she is imprisoned by Sycorax.

Ferdinand

Ferdinand is the son of Alonso. When his ship wrecked he believed his father had died. He swam to the shore of the island alone and the first time he saw Miranda he fell in love. Prospero thinks they can be in love that fast and uses his magic to make Ferdinand a slave. Though Ferdinand puts up with it since he gets to see Miranda. Prospero rewards him for being loyal and allowing him to marry Miranda.

Alonso

Alonso helps Antonio get rid of Prospero and take his place as Duke of Milan. Alonso has two children a son, Ferdand and he also has a daughter named Claribel. His ship was caught in the storm. The people that were on board were himself, his son, and his nobles. He thinks Ferdinand drowned. When Alonso meets Prospero he apologizes for making his brother Duke and makes Prospero Duke Again. He is reunited with Ferdinand and finds out about his marriage and is delighted.

Sebastian

Sebastian is Alonso's younger brother. He is persuaded to kill his brother. When he is caught in the act he makes up a story trying to get himself out of it.

Trinculo

Trinculo is a Jester and serves king Alonso. After a shipwreck, he washed up on shore alone. Trinculo was trying to find shelter and crawled under Caliban's cloak. His Friend Stephano discovers them and is introduced to Caliban. Caliban persuades Stephano to try to kill Prospero and Trinculo follows along.

Ariel

Ariel is the chief of the island she is a spirit/ fairy, and she is in control of all the spirits on the island. Ariel also has the power to create storms. Prospero found him imprisoned, Ariel was imprisoned by Sycorax. In return for being freed, Ariel serves Prospero. Prospero is the only person that can see Ariel. In the end, after carrying out all of Prospero's orders, he is freed.

Gonzalo

Gonzalo is the chief advisor to Alonso. He serves the king and is the king's councilman. He is remembered by Prospero for his kindness in making sure everything was aboard. He tries to keep Alonso in good spirits while looking for Ferdinand.

Miranda

Miranda is Prospero's Daughter and his only child. She has lived on the Island almost her whole life. Ferdinand once on the Island Miranda and Ferdinand fall in love. Though becomes a slave and once proven worthy receives Mirandas Fathers Blessing.

Caliban

Caliban is the son of Sycorax. After his mother died he was the only one on the island besided the invisible spirits. When Prospero and Miranda arrive, they treat him like family. Caliban helps Prospero and Miranda survive. Though Prospero catches Caliban trying to sexually assault Miranda he throws him out of the family. Caliban is now a slave, but when people arrive at the island he plots with a butler to try to kill Prospero seeking revenge for becoming a slave. Though Prospero catches on and defeats his plans.

Sycorax

Sycorax was a witch. Along was also the Mother of Caliban. She was abandoned on the island and gave birth to her son Caliban. She captured Ariel and imprisoned her. Later on she dies leaving Ariel captured and trapped.

Adrian

Adrian is also a lord that serves Alonso. He was on the ship with Alonso, Francisco, and Ferdinand. He helped Francisco and Alonso look for Alonso's son Ferdinand on the island.

Stephano washes up on the Island drunk. Stephano is also King Alonso's butler. He wanders around until he stumbles upon Trinculo and Caliban and shares his wine with them. Caliban thinks Stephano is a god. Caliban persuades Stephono and his friend Trinculo follows along with the plan. Caliban thinks of Stephano as his new ruler.

Antonio

Antonio is Prosperos younger brother. Prospero trusted his younger brother to help rule. Though Antonia took advantage of Prosperos trust and Antonio and Alonso overthrew him and took his place as duke. Antonio is in debt to Alonso and wants Sebastian to become king so he can be relieved of his debt.

The need to control is the concept of power. A person being able to control other beings, and having a status is what feeds the need to have power and to have power. Antonio shows power by overthrowing his brother and becoming the new Duke of Milan. Also, another concept of power is using it for good and bad. For example, Prospero freed Ariel and chose to then enslave Ariel. While the shipmates also had power with their knowledge on how to control the boat. Everyone besides the ship crew did not know how to save this ship giving the ship crew the power.

Perspectives

Different perspectives cause different individuals to act differently in situations.

In the play, the people on the island who have been there a long time are going to act differently on the island than the people who washed up from the sea.

A not-so-common perspective is Antonios. He has the perspective of being a ruler and also being a townsperson. He got to be a ruler and have the power to make decisions and control people. While he also was a normal person and had to follow all the rules and not have a say in anything.

Knowledge

Knowledge is power, if a person has more knowledge they are granted more power if desired.

If one out of two people has knowledge about a certain topic they have more power and control than the person who lacks that wisdom.

For example, Prospero has a lot of knowledge. He knows the people on the ship and about the place they came from. Along with Prospero has the knowledge of the island. Where things are, what creatures were on the Island, where water is etc...

Perspective (Act 3)

In Act 3 there are a lot of different themes of perspective. Caliban was left on the island by himself when his mother died. Prospero and Miranda took him in as a family. Until Caliban tries to do things with Miranda and her dad gets enraged and enslaves him for his cruel actions.

Caliban lacks a perspective of his actions and resorts to violence in many situations. For example, Caliban says, " I say by sorcery he got this isle;/ From me he got it. If thy Greatness will,/ Revenge it on him, for I know thou dar’st,/ But this thing dare not"(Shakespeare 3.2. 59-62). Caliban lacks perspective therefore resorting to violence.

Another example of perspective is a lack of experience, Ferdinand and Miranda, and their love for each other is a good example because Miranda lacks experience as she has never dated before.

Perspective(Act 2)

Having a bigger perspective can affect how powerful or in control a person feels.

" Beseech you, sir, be merry. You have cause—/ So have we all—of joy, for our escape/ Is much beyond our loss" (Shakespeare 2.1. 1-3).

Gonzalo has the perspective that rather than complaining about the ship recking and being stranded he focuses on the positive. While other people on the ship like Antonio and Sebastian are ungrateful and think the island is gross. In this situation, Gonzalo has a bigger perspective causing him to feel in power or in control. While Sebastian and Antoni could feel less in power as they are complaining about being on the island.
