That night Polyphemus had brought all his sheep back into his cavern, and Odysseus had gotten Polyphemus drunk and then used an olive tree to make a spike, which he had stabbed him in his eye. The textual evidence also shows how Odysseus had courage to calm his men for what was getting ready to happen.  Circe told Odysseus who to pass through earlier in the story so Odysseus obeyed "I sent them on toward Scylla" (Homer line 783). If he weren't there his men would have all been scared to death and not prepared for what was about to happen. Odysseus bravery was shown when he was fighting the suitors " drew his fist cruel head of an arrow for Antinous" (Homer line 1412). If he had not killed the suitors they would have taken over Ithaca and his spot as a leader. One way Odysseus used his intelligence was when he had to escape Polyphemus and when he told him his "name" "My name is Nohbdy" (Homer line 315).
