OVERNUTRITION: CASE STUDY by Health&Wellbeing@Schools

Overnutrition is increasingly prevalent among adolescents in urban areas of Greece. This trend is alarming because it not only affects the current health of young people but also sets the stage for chronic diseases later in life, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions. The rise in overnutrition among Greek adolescents is influenced by a combination of lifestyle changes, cultural shifts, and food availability, particularly in urban settings like Athens and Thessaloniki. Could you make a research and investigate how lifestyle, cultural factors, and food availability contribute to the condition?

nowdays, kids are more independent meaning that there's a high possibility they're going to eat more unhealthy. Also, both parents are working so that means there is not fresh food at home and they probably gonna eat fast food.

The key driver for eating is of course hunger but what we choose to eat is not determined solely by physiological or nutritional needs. Accessibility to shops is an important physical factor influencing food choice, which is dependent on resources such as transport and geographical location. Lifestyle experiences are what confirm or alter perceptions that influence food choices.

Obesity is often the result of sitting and lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating habits and stress. Urban living often leads to sedentary behaviors among adolescents. The prevalence of screen time, including television, computers, and smartphones, has increased, reducing physical activity levels.

Additionally, many adolescents skip breakfast and consume meals while engaged with screens, leading to poor dietary choices and overeating.

Irregular meal patterns are common. The availability of fast and processed food, which is cheaper and more accessible than healthy food, also plays a large role in the increase in the number of obese people. We tend to overeat when we are stressed or bored.

Cultures that promote abundant food intake or idealize a fuller body can contribute to overweight.

We think that Overnutrition is a phenomen that is increasing during time because the amount of chemical food such as protein snacks are increasing. This affects the psychological aspect, being really nervous and sometimes very angry. For Us it’s better to eat healthy handmade food, not something that you can easily find in a supermarket. We also have to note that with more mothers working, home-cooked meals have become less common, leading children to eat more meals outside the home.

We think that the main reason for the overnutrition's phenomenon in adolescents is social media, for example with all these food influencers that do impossible challenge eating kilos of food. We usually prefer eating with our friends then with family somewhere outside. Also we prefer eating home food because most of the times it also has better quality.

Addressing overnutrition in adolescents requires a multifaceted approach:

Promoting Physical Activity: Encouraging regular exercise to counteract sedentary lifestyles.

Nutritional Education: Implementing programs that emphasize the benefits of traditional Mediterranean diets.

Improving Food Environments: Regulating the availability and marketing of unhealthy foods, especially near schools.

Parental and Community Involvement: Engaging families and communities in promoting healthy eating habits.
