The purpose of our project was to prove whether or not gender would affect the reactions that a stranger would give you in public. We went up to random people in public, and asked them to let us use their phone, and recorded their answers. We asked several people each, they were all alone, and were a variety of ages and genders. We then compared the answers Xavier got, and the answers I got.

Results and Discussion

After conducting the experiment, the results showed that everyone Katie asked for help, was willing to help, while three out of five of the people Xavier asked were not willing to help him. The three people who said no to Xavier were middle-aged to older women, and the people who said yes to him were middle aged men. Katie also asked a variety of people, but they all said yes to her. The results of this experiment show that less people were willing to help Xavier than were willing to help Katie. The people who were willing to help Xavier were the same gender as him, while both genders were willing to help Katie. This is probably because middle-aged to older women who are alone, don’t feel as safe helping a young man, as they would feel helping a young woman. Whereas another man would not feel threatened by a young man. This means that our hypothesis was correct; more people trusted Katie than Xavier. These results show that in general, more people would be likely to trust a young woman, than a young man. Some of these results counter those of the research that was done. The research said that people would be more likely to help a person of the opposite gender than they would of someone of the same gender. Our experiment, on the other hand, showed that women were more likely to help the young girl, and men were more likely to help a young man.
