Sadako gets voted to be in the relay race for the bamboo class. When she is running she feels dizziness in her head , but she easily shakes it away. Every time she is running the dizziness returns. One day she was running and she sank to the ground. She was brought to the hospital and figured out she has leukemia. Remembering a old legend, Sadako sets to work making paper cranes. The legend goes that if a sick person makes one thousand cranes the gods will make their wish come true. One day Sadako meets someone named Kenji. They become best friends. That night learns some devistating news. Kenji had died.
