EDUC Essential Questions: 1. What was the initial intent of the public education system, and what challenges does public education currently face? 2. What needs must be met by the public education system, and how should they be addressed? 3. Why are families opting for alternatives to public education after the COVID-19 pandemic? Are these alternatives practical?

Initially, education had fairly simple goals - to teach people to write, read, and count. Over time, the education system has evolved and the public has had the opportunity to gain deeper knowledge, but with this came problems and challenges. Education system expanded, more people got access to knowledge, and, as we know, large crowds of people can cause broblems. Goverment developed different rules and regulations, to make people more organised. - Artem Romanov

adressing question 1. the intent of public education is still debated, but we do have accounts of individual examples. Massachusetts being the first colony to pass law regarding education aswell as the first colony to open a public education system. the initial intent was to teach children, primarily boys, how to read and write so that the could have a comprehensive understanding of the bible. reading the bible was to be done in english, latin, and greek. so arguably its first intent was early set religious proliferation and indoctrination as this was important to the puritanical community at the time.
major challenges the public education system faces today are underfunding/inequality, information that lacks a full picture, ill-equipped and poorly trained staff, illiteracy, lack of accomadations, and regular political attacks on the education system aiming to disenfranchise the public pf their right to knowledge and education.

Currently, the public education systems struggle to incorporate engaging lessons for students, flexible learning methods and deadlines, as well as relatable/relevant information. The participation rate in many public schools is scarce and attendance is low. In addition, most students who don't bother to complete their assignments are uninterested in the subjects that they are being taught and don't understand how that information is useful. Furthermore, they aren't allowed to partake in their desired electives due to a strict graduation requirement. So ultimately, public schools are not properly structured to tend to students' needs and/or desires.

I agree with you, Kamila, a challenge faced today is definitely the teacher to student ratio. When there's a high number of students compared to a single teacher, it becomes difficult for the teacher to provide individual attention and support for each student. This affects the quality of education and can reduce the learning and engagement of students. Smaller class sizes for a single teacher would definitely have a more positive impact on the quality of learning and student-teacher interaction.

Kayla- Ashley, I agree with you that mental health, food services and educational resources need to be the same for everyone. Even families who are wealthy may not give their kids access to resources they need. It is unfair that they would not have access to what they need when it is provided to others.
