This is a magnificent story about a child bonding with his grandmother and being inspired. The young boy has to stay with his Grandmother over the Christmas break.  He gets her to take him to a museum where she connects with a piece of artwork.  The boy receives one of the best Christmas presents because of that trip, a sketch book and pencils.  The illustrations of this book show the diversity of the hispanic culture.  They allow children of Hispanic descent to see themselves in an inspiring tale. This would be a great story to read during "Hispanic Heritage" month so that more children can learn about that culture. Children learn about two different communities and cultures through a pen pal relationship between two cousins. The cousins live in different countries and are writing to each other sharing things the do in their community. The reader gets to see a different lifestyle and recreational activities.  In the end, both cousins have a great idea to have the counterpart come visit.  Children that have relatives in different countries would enjoy this story because it would help help feel proud of the different familial lives.

A narrative nonfiction about the life of Diego Rivera where students can learn about his study of art. Diego Rivera studies abroad and was asked to return to Mexico to paint the customs and culture of his homeland. He merged his study of classical painting and Cubism to create his own unique style. He was responsible for many murals in Mexico. He painted important historical events alongside current events. The reader is left wondering what Diego Rivera would paint in modern day. This book would be perfect for an Art teacher that is working on introducing different artist so that students can merge styles to create a unique one. This is an amazing story that could lead to a plethora of classroom discussions. A little girl is happy with her unique sense of style until she hears that she "doesn't match" one too many times. She tries to fit in to what she thinks is "normal" and has a terrible day. Her teacher writes her a note to let her know that she is liked for exactly who she is; then, Marisol decides to go back to being herself. Her family decides to adopt a puppy from the pound and she picks one that is mismatched just like her. This story should be shared with all students to teach social acceptance. A person (whether multiracial or not) should feel like they are just right. Students should listen to this story and respect the differences of our population and not try to make a person fit into a certain look. This story gives readers a cultural lesson on wrestling. A young boy uses his imagination to create a world where he is battling famous wrestlers. He is defeating all his opponents until his sisters wake up from a nap. Once his sisters join the wrestling match, he is defeated only to join them in a tickling match. This book would be best shared with a young audience as they would find the underwear clad boy hilarious. A young boy tells about getting his loving Abuelita ready for work.  He parallels the process she goes through to get ready. He reminds her of all the materials and supplies she will need. He reminds her of the clothing she usually takes. They finally arrive at the destination and he tells us that she is a storyteller. He wants to be a storyteller like his grandmother when he grows up. The love and adoration he has for his grandmother is evident in the way he describes her. This would be a great story to read to students when studying traditional literature. A version of the classic Little Red Riding Hood, this story uses the basic story and adds a twist by adding Spanish words and rhyme. The little girl likes to wear red capes and needs to go through the woods to take some "sopa" to her "abuela" that is sick in bed. She comes across a wolf that tricks her into taking the cape off so that he can get it and go to Abuelita's house. Little Roja arrives just in time to save Abuelita. This would be a great book to use with young bilingual students that are learning English. This book has the characters code switch by using Spanish words in the middle of an English sentence. A cumulative tale where in the farm maiden, farm animals and "campesino" all take part in stirring a pot to make a traditional Hispanic dessert. They are making arroz con leche. At the end of the book, there is a recipe. This story would be a great story to use to integrate diversity while introducing procedural text. Hearing about all the characters helping make the dessert would get student excited about making the dessert. Señor Calavera is on his way to Abuelita's party when he gets stopped Zelmiro.  Zelmiro asks Señor Calavera if he has the right gift for Abuelits.  They add several gifts in alphabetical order until Señor Calavera is about to miss the party.  As he is completely load, he loses all the gifts.  In the end, Señor Calavera bring Abuelita the best gift she could ever want. The illustrations are representative of Day of the Dead celebrations; therefore, this would be a good cultural lesson on the significance of that holiday.
