Fossil fuels come from the decay of organisms buried in sediments that are pressed tightly together for millions of years, at very high temperatures. These nonrenewable resources are rich in energy. They exist as solids, liquids, and gases - some examples of which are coal, petroleum, and natural gas. The use of fossil fuels made global industrialization possible. Fossil fuels currently supply the world with more than 85 percent of its energy.

The high demand for fossil fuels comes with environmental costs. Mining fossil fuels often involves the destruction of surrounding ecosystems. When fossil fuels are burned for energy, they release carbon dioxide (CO2). Two hundred years of burning fossil fuels has increased the concentration of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists say the heightened level of these gases has increased Earth’s temperature over time; this will likely continue.

At present, alternative energy sources to fossil fuels account for about 13 percent of world energy consumption. These include solar, wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear power, as well as biofuels. With these alternative fuel sources, humans can lower the amount of damage done to the environment while still powering vehicles, homes, and businesses.
