In class this week, Hannah introduced us to utilising the 'stream of consciousness' method (masterclass.com, 2021), where you set a timer and simply write everything in your head onto paper. We had five minutes, and my brain came up with some interesting stuff - 'shit quiche' being a particular favourite. I found the activity really useful and I ended up feeling really inspired by the word 'yellow', stemming three lyrical phrases pictured above. I decided this week to write a love song about a girl with a 'sunshine state of mind'. A girl that I am yet to meet, but hope one day I do.

I approached my classmate Roddy with my ideas and explained to him the kind of vibe I was going for. Together we built up a rough chord progression which sounded warm and fuzzy. It sounded like sunshine. From here, I ad-libbed over the top of these chords, slowly piecing together a rough melody.

I sat with the melody idea, writing lyrics as I went and in our next lesson Roddy and I ran through what I had so far. I'm really liking where this song is heading, especially the pre-chorus type section 'But won't you stay'. It's like if the artists Tom Misch and Nao collaborated, two of my greatest inspirations, it might sound a little like this. I'd really like for the song to be soft and light, but kinda groovy too - very soul/r&b meets jazz-pop.

As well as the metaphors 'she's yellow' and 'gotta sunshine state of mind' I've used similes like 'blinds me like the light' to further relate to the imagery of the glow of sunlight. I'm thinking I might like to change the line 'oh but I'll never have her' to be more positive as I'd like to keep this song having a happy, uplifting energy. Aside from that however, I really like where this is heading. It's a feel-good track - something I haven't written many of - ever. I envisage the second verse into the chorus being bigger and bolder, with some funky bassline or break beat behind it, that could be cool.
