What are the qualifications of the author? GO to websites research backgrounds. Look for author's notes about research done on the topic.
Look for Go-To author's who write on a variety of topics
 
Are the facts accurate? We have to rely on authors. Take a book about a specific topic (sharks) and have students evaluate the books. Have students "find out" the info.
Look at resources from lists- Outstanding Trade Books in Science and Notable Trade Books in the Social Studies or others from content professionals 
 
What is the purpose and scope? 
Consider age groups and topics . Is the book broad or more specific? 
 
Will the organization of the book assist students in finding the info they need?
Look for table of contents, indexes, suggestions for further reading, timelines, glossaries, etc. This also helps with validating author's and the research they conducted on the topic of the book.
Look for text features(photos, maps, charts, side bars, etc). These will help students gain information quickly.

Possibly comparing and contrasting both to evaluate how each tells a story.
