In the operation to evacuate at Dunkirk, Britain's Royal Navy needed every vessel possible, big or small, to evacuate as many soldiers as possible. So the British public responded unexpectedly huge, and a big number of vessels were sent to the Royal navy. People were giving up small paddle steamers to yachts for the operation, there were some vessels that came as far away as the Isle of Man. A Tamzine is on display in the Imperial War museum, and it was the smallest vessel used in the operation, it was only 14 feet long. The patience and resilience of the soldiers was outstanding, Signaller Alfred Baldwin recalled at Dunkirk there were no pushing or aggressive acting from the troops, and it seemed as if they were waiting for a bus.
