Atonement: reparation for a wrong or injury.

Redemption: the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil.
- Atonement is done by one's own self, an attempt to right a wrong. On the other hand, redemption is grace/mercy being given, potentially from an outside source.
-Both are possible for anyone, although the actions of each may differ from one another, because Atonement requires one to feel guilt before making an attempt to redeem themselves. Guilt is where I would draw the line.

“The shifts of Fortune test the reliability of friends” (Cicero 106 BC – 43 BC)
- I wouldn't say that I'm a very good friend. Often, I make friends for my own sake, to rid myself of loneliness. It's a selfish goal, really. But when it really comes down to it, I believe a friend is essential to keeping me on the right track.
- I find that the best friendships are ones where both individuals try enjoy the other's company. Amir and Hassan's friendship was hindered by the fact that it was one sided at first, with Amir not being able to treasure it until it was too late.
“If malice or envy were tangible and had a shape, it would be the shape of a boomerang,” said by Charley Reese
- I have felt jealousy, many times. Seeing others being successful while I struggle invokes those feelings. I'm not sure what physical jealously means, but psychological jealously is probably the most common form.
- I don't think jealousy can be a good emotion. It creates feelings of hate and bitterness towards another person. It can lead to us to bad decisions to get back at the other person.

John Lennon once stated, “How you spend your days is how you spend your life.”
- I truly do think that the choices I make each day, both big and small, define who I am as a person.
- Often I make mistakes, like missing out on opportunities that could've made me a new friend. Even the smallest actions can create a large difference, I understand that now. Being confident and friendly can really go a long way. The connections I form also define me, as I'm influenced by the people I know.
- Living a healthy life is optimal of course, but I wouldn't call my lifestyle very healthy. I'm too lazy and dependent on others.
- As for larger choices, I guess college applications count. I've decided to go to FLC. I don't know what path that will take me, but I'm both nervous and excited at the same time. This decision could potentially ruin me, as learning to be independent is postponed.
- The majority of my errors involve the hurting of others (not physically), rather than myself. I regret all of those. Those errors reflect who I am to others around me. My actions allow others to form their own impressions of me, good or bad.

“The guilty think all talk is of themselves,” said by Chaucer.
- Amir is keeping to himself, purposely staying away from Hassan. It's a mixture of pride and guilt from Amir.
- My skeletons in my closet? I usually don't keep secrets. I do have some things I want to keep to myself. I mentioned this in Journal 3, but I wished I initiated talking to more people. My lack of confidence has harmed me in the long run.
-I'm sure that there are many others with worse regrets. The stories I've heard from other students are depressing.
- I wouldn't want someone else to shoulder my own guilt. Why? Because guilt and regret is what helps me to make better choices in the future.

- My parents show their support for me all the time, through the food they give me, their encouragement, and their sacrifices at work.
- My parents wouldn't show pride if I made a mistake. After all, them showing pride would allow me to continue with that behavior.
- As for what kind of Adult I would be, I'm not sure. Technically, I'm already an adult, but I don't feel like one. As for pride, I don't feel pride in being an adult. To be an adult is to bear responsibility. I don't know if I'm ready for the trials ahead, whether the choices I'll make will be mature.

Rahim Khan says to Amir, “a boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up for anything. I wonder, is that what you’ve become?” (Hosseini 221).
- Amir definitely has changed for the better. He bears the guilt of his past actions, never letting go of it. He seeks atonement, and finally has his chance when Rahim Khan calls.
- The fact that Amir went back to Antofagasta is evidence of his changed self: he is willing to go meet Hassan to ask for forgiveness.
But a greater evidence is when Amir said: "

‘I won’t ever get tired of you, Sohrab,’ I said. ‘Not ever. That’s a promise.’

- Amir was willing to do anything for Sohrab, his nephew. He no longer cared only for himself. He didn't run from Asself, from pain, or from suffering. He gave his all to the safety of Sohrab.

“for the first time since the winter of 1975, I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some hidden nook in the corner of my mind, I’d even been looking forward to this” ( Hosseini 289)
- Amir has provided a family, a home for Sohrab. Although Sohrab may never heal from trauma, at least he has someone close to refer to, to connect with.
1) Is it possible to atone for our wrongdoings?
- Probably not, in my opinion. But we can make atonement by asking for forgiveness and not making the same mistake. Our wrongdoings will stick with us for life, affecting the people around us. But unlike Assef, who stayed a jerk, Amir was able to change for the better.

- My definition of love is: prioritizing someone ahead of oneself. Although Hassan clearly loved Amir, Amir didn't truly love Hassan at first. It took time for Amir to reflect on all the actions that Hassan has done for Amir's sake. It was only then, decades of years later, that Amir finally realized that he, in fact, did love Hassan. Why else would Amir go to such great lengths to rescue Sohrab?
- As for Baba, it is clear that he treasures Amir. Baba is willing to support Amir in a writing career, despite Baba originally wanting Amir to go after a profession that earned more money. Baba supported Amir in his marriage as well, even on his own deathbed. These are but two incidents of the love that Baba has for his son. Although Baba is not the perfect father (no one is), he does his best to raise Amir to become independent and responsible. He wants what's best for his son, but is willing to put aside his personal beliefs for Amir's happiness.
- “Sohrab, I can’t give you your old life back, I wish to God I could. But I can take you with me. That was what I was coming in the bathroom to tell you. You have a visa to go to America, to live with me and my wife. It’s true. I promise.” (355)
- Through Sohrab, Amir is able to show love to Hassan, who is no longer capable of directly receiving that love. Amir is willing to raise a child that isn't directly his own, to repay a debt to Hassan for everything Hassan has done. But it's not just about repaying a debt anymore. Because Amir loves Hassan, he takes in Sohrab, debt or no debt. Sohrab is Hassan's most precious son after all.
