“Aging in Place” or living in one’s own home still is the clear preference for the majority older adults. According to AARP, roughly 75% of adults aged 50 and older want to stay in their home, while 73% hope to stay in their current communities. However, many are unsure if their homes can support their needs (AARP, 2024a). This concern shows the importance of planning and creating environments where it can support them.

As adults age, they will need to figure out the kind of support they will need now and in the future to be able to stay at home. Part of this planning includes types of home modifications to accommodate for their lack of mobility, home care from family or house nurses, access to different types of transportation, and other health services. Planning ahead gives them more control and gives them a blueprint of how they want to live out their final days before their cognitive and physical abilities are diminish. (National Institute on Aging, 2023).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2023) further shows healthy aging as not just the absence of diseases, but also the pursuit of physical, mental, and social well-being throughout their life. Maintaining social connections, being active by exercising, and receiving preventive care are key strategies that support the independent living lifestyle.

Finally, AARP (2024b) says that aging in place is not just a personal or family matter, but it also requires support from public policy. Communities must offer affordable housing, transportation, and health care to ensure older adults can remain in their homes. Without these systems, even the best personal preparation may not work.
