"For us, the underlying structure of effective academic writing—and of responsible public discourse—resides not just in stating our own ideas but in listening closely to others around us"
Being able to listen to other people and their ideas is how one can be more elaborate in their academic writing. It allows us to expand our ideas beyond just our brain. I chose this quote because often English teachers tell students to always listen and share ideas with other students to expand your thinking. Can others ideas make our academic writing bad?

"to challenge standard ways of thinking, and thus to stir up controversy. This point may come as a shock to you if you have always had the impression that in order to succeed academically you need to play it safe and avoid controversy in your writing, making statements that nobody can possibly disagree with."
Why are people so scared of controversy and expressing their opinions? We don't all have to agree on each other statements. I chose this quote because in this generation everything is controversial if someone doesn't agree with you, but in writing being controversial is what makes one think. It challenges the reader to disagree or even agree.

I chose this quote out of this page because its the opposite of what we are taught in school or in an English class. We are taught to summarize, summarize and summarize, but many students may find it hard because they might not know what to say. One has to go back and forth with whatever the person is reading. It's hard to put many words into a short summary without being biased or not providing all the necessary information or making sense.

I disagree with this quote that it's a long list of summaries that discourage kids from doing them. Rather I think that its because we don't know how to properly read an article and keep in mind the focus of it to be able to write a summary. We know that summary contain important key points about what is being read but with so much information its hard not to list and list again without being to fully explain or comprehend what is happening.

This quote about "overly explaining quotes is better than having a small explanation" is very conflicting to me. If a writer over explains something it makes the reader bored but if a writer doesn't explain something it leaves the reader wondering and clueless. So the question is what is the right amount of explanation? How can I explain a quote without having to bore the reader? I wish this quote would provide more of an example to which extent this hack or tip would work.
