The 1920's was constantly referred to as the "Roaring Twenties" and the "Jazz Age" . This was because of the booming period of rapid economic expansion, but it was also because of the changing social attitudes. Society was discovering newly found freedoms. 
Economic growth was high in the 1920's and peoples living standards grew as well.
There were many reasons for the booming economy in the 1920's.
  •  Growth in the automobile industry
  • High levels of consumer confidence.
  • Improvements in technology. This was partly the result of WWI
  • Improvements in labour productivity.
  • Scientific management 
  • Mass production

1930's 
In the beginning of the 1930's more than 15 million Americans were unemployed . The president at the time didn't really do much to help this. In 1932 Americans elected FDR. FDR pledged to use the power of the government to make American lives better.
FDR's new deal created a new role for the government. And even though the deal by itself did not end the depression it did provide a safety net for the suffering Americans.
