Inside Out and Back Again is a coming-of-age novel that all adolescents can connect to as the protagonist faces her dreams, grief, and new challenges as an outside looking in. Along with being relatable, this book is accessible for many different readers. Since the story is told in verse, the author uses few words to create a powerful story. Reluctant readers will not find this book too daunting to pick up as the pages are not full of lengthy prose. The narrator's humor will also keep young readers interested as they laugh along side Hà's experiences.

In reference to diversity, this text introduces a different voice to young readers in the form of a young Vietnamese refugee. Through Hà's voice, readers learn about Vietnamese culture and some of the language; a culture not widely written about in US YA literature. Readers also are able to see and relate or empathize with a refugee's experiences. Hà's story may open a young reader's mind to perspective (s)he may have yet to consider.

CC.1.3: Reading Literature: Students read and respond to works of literature - with emphasis on comprehension, making connections among ideas and between texts with focus on textual evidence

This book could be added into two units in my seventh grade ELA curriculum.

This book could be used in a poetry unit. This book could be one option among other novels told in verse by diverse authors (Kwame Alexander, Jacqueline Woodson, Jayson Reynolds, etc.) for literature circles. With groups, students could read and reflect on author's craft in reference to poetic devices while discussing the development across common themes. At the end of the literature circles, students can share common themes across all the novel options. This can also lead to a discussion about diverse voices and the significance of reading from diverse authors.

If not used in a poetry unit, I could use excerpts from this book to pair with my novel unit where the class reads Esperanza Rising. Students could discuss the similarities and differences between the two protagonists and their experiences. Students could also research and discuss the differences between immigrants and refugees using the two protagonists as examples of each. These two novels, although set in history, can be compared to many similar events occurring now and could spark insightful discussion amongst students.

This book could also be utilized by Social Studies teachers, especially when discussing different cultures.
