~ We drew a circle on a rectangular board of wood before taking it over to the saw and cutting the board in half and then cutting out a rough circle around the one we drew. Using the saw was different to what I expected, it wasn't going round as smooth as I thought it would.

~ Using the sander.  Rounded out the rough edges and made it smooth. I was slightly terrified to use the sander but it was actually easy to control. 

~ Using the drill. This was easy to do but also boring but I now know how to use it.

~ Using the Bandsaw? This was slightly smoother than the first saw because it was smaller and we used this to make a curved design in the wood. I still had trouble with it though. 

~ Using the Wood Burning Tool. This was a lot of fun and I really liked using it but I noticed that the tip would go cold if you drew into the wood for too long so you had to take it off and let it reheat for a bit. It was easy to draw designs and even write my name as it felt like a normal pen.

The first was made with a charcoal pencil and we did two pieces where the model moved positions for each drawing. Whilst we only had limited time, I preferred using the charcoal as I've used them a little bit before but I still wasn't happy with the outcome.

For the second we taped two markers and had the draw model sitting down. We did this three times and she changed position each time. I used pink and blue for the first and third drawing and then red and green which created really 3D effects and messed with my eyes a lot during drawing. I didn't like this method.

The last drawing was by far the most difficult. We had to do three drawings on top of each other whilst the model moved slightly for each one. 1. Plato’s theory on ‘secondary images’ versus Aristotle’s. 

Plato accuses that "painters distract our attention with their likeness of the way things look; yet the way things look is itself only a poor likeness of their true nature" which sounds like he's saying painters ruin things as they "take away" from their originals. I agree in the sense that some painters try to recreate a piece and "ruin" the meaning of the first or try to claim it as their own, however all painters differentiate and usually don't want to recreate a piece, they just want to put their own style on them.
He also seems to suggest that you don't obtain knowledge from paintings and they mime the original images. This could mean that as painters recreate each piece or as painters come up with new ideas based on an original, it turns into copies of copies and eventually the originals will basically disappear. 



2. Using an image of your choice : In your opinion, are images a reliable source of information? 

I think the majority of the images we come across throughout the media and the internet aren't a reliable source of information as there is always something changed about them, whether it's filters or editing everything to make it "pretty". If you see a photo of a landscape, you can usually guarantee that when you finally visit that place, it doesn't look nearly as nice as the influencers made it look on the Internet.
Many people who look at Andy Warhol's Campbell soup cans might actually believe that they look like that and not that they're a colourful remake of the originals.

The process included :
- Folding paper in half (Recommended 5 sheets for starting as it is hard to poke through more) including the book cover
- Trimming down the inside pages so the cover was larger and would protect the inside pages
- Measuring how many holes we wanted to poke (I did 3 for both books but I should've done 5 or 7 for my A4 book as 3 felt loose)
- Stitching all the pages together including the cover (Was given a guide on where to start and where to end)

It was difficult to use but I had some fun with it.
The first one we made was of the model lying down, I definitely struggled with proportions but I always seem to. 
The second one was harder because I had to mainly draw a chair but also easier because it was mostly straight lines. I hate that both these pieces are unfinished but I don't do well with new materials or time restraints.

I liked that we had longer to draw these poses (I think we had maybe 50 minutes) because it meant that I could actually focus on all the aspects instead of just trying to get a finished model but this did mean that my drawings were only 80% completed.

My first thought was "knick knacks" or little trinket things so I tried to design a trinket box with a fun twist.

I wanted my piece to be intricate but also have a handmade quality to it so I added mismatched feet and swirls for the intricacy.

I had to do a bigger sculpture than I originally planned because the aeroply would snap instead of bend if I went small. I wasn't happy with this decision as my idea was a small trinket box but I knew I had to work with what I could.

I first cut a sheet of aeroply and rolled it into a circle shape ; once I was happy with that, I added loads of glue and clamped it together so it could dry over night.
I realised that I hadn't measured the length or diameter of the circle before gluing and clamping together so I made a rough estimate and cut out a thicker piece of wood for the base which I'll cut down If needed.

Lastly, I needed to cut panels to turn into a dome for the top piece, I did some rubbish maths and cut out six triangles which will hopefully fit around the top. 
I am expecting gaps inbetween the panels as that's what I came across when I finished my first rough cardboard piece but I sort of like it so I don't mind.
I have no idea how I plan on attaching the domes to the circle or how I'll curl them over but I'll figure out as I get to it.

We started with making a negative of something in clay. This wasn't something that I've done before so I found this incredibly difficult but it was fun trying to figure out what would have be indented and what would have to be protruding, I knew from the start that my final outcome would look terrifying and I was very right. 
In college, we sort of did it the other way, we made the clay piece first then attached it to a well of clay before pouring in the plaster so that we had a mould for pieces that we might've needed multiple of. 

Then we were taught how to use Modroc, I already had experience with this but I still wanted to do it again. My partner placed the Modroc over my hand which was shaped into a middle finger because I wanted to do something different compared to just spreading my hand out.
It was so much fun, the mould turned out really intricate and you could see all the details of my hand

How might we consider materials when making art?

Functionality – does it do the job?
  • My first sculpture (made with plastic, masking tape, and hot glue) was almost functional, I would've been able to move the dome pieces which was my initial idea if I had found a way to connect them in a way that would allow them to move individually
  • My Wood sculpture will have no functionality as it is quite a hard material to work with in a short amount of time. Using Aeroply means I can't make my sculpture very small since it will snap, I don't like this because my initial idea was a small trinket box and not this massive storage looking box. Aeroply also won't bend the way I want it to unless I glue but I don't want to glue my domes together.
  • I'm hoping my plaster sculpture will be functional or at least the size and shape I want. I think it will be light and that I will be able to make the dome pieces functional (I could glue a strip or Modroc or something stable from the base of the dome to the top of the circle piece) which is the main thing I'd like to achieve by the end of making all my sculptures

We used Fine liners for both drawings but I also used Posca Pens to create different sized lines which meant that I could differentiate between the lines of the model and the lines of the things around her. 
Once again, I didn't manage to complete my drawings as I spent a lot of time detailing bits at a time. 
Drawing faces hasn't improved as I really struggle with proportions in faces and I definitely messed up a few times with adding lines where they shouldn't have been but it doesn't look too bad.

For my previous drawings I never added in the background - I either didn't have enough time because I'd focus on the model more, I couldn't see the background well enough to draw it or there was too much in the background so I never wanted to take away from the model.
But I added it today for my final drawing as I wasn't happy with my model so I wanted to focus on something new for a minute and I actually think it was kind of helpful and added depth to my piece. If I had more time then I would've shaded the background so it looked more 3D.

1. In your own words, can you describe (or explain) the relationship between calligraphy and painting in Chinese art? 

Relationship between Calligraphy and Painting is very significant. "The Chinese way of appreciating a painting is - du hua, “to read a painting" - Hearn, M. (2008). “Chinese Painting”. Calligraphy needs to be learned and mastered before they can consider themselves able to create paintings - can't start one without the other. They used the brushstrokes of Calligraphy and relied on line instead of sketching as Chinese artists would never be allowed to make mistakes since they couldn't change it. I think this also applied to painting which might be why Calligraphy came first, it could've been extremely expensive to start painting.


2. In this essay, Calligraphy, Poetry and Painting are described as the ‘three perfections’, all coming together in Chinese Art.
Explain and describe how both works combine Calligraphy, Poetry and Painting to make an ‘artwork’

For my image from the text, I chose 'Wind Among the Trees on a Riverbank by Ni Zan' and for my own image, I chose an image that I found on Instagram by the artist Terry Urban. I chose his work because it has no colour and also involves writing, The image combines the 'three perfections' as Calligraphy falls under the category of handwriting and typography and for it to relate to the piece I chose from the text, the only 'colours' in the piece are Black and White. I chose this specific exhibition because of the tables that the sculptures are sat on. The tables look like they are crafted perfectly to the exact measurements of each work, this makes them look like the houses actually has legs and it adds a weird element to them.

I would like to add something to weird to my sculpture because it is boring remaking the same thing and I think incredibly long legs would be something different. Reflection - I haven’t written a poem in a long while so I wasn’t sure where to start. I looked at the image and tried to find some adjectives that I could use to describe it. Eventually I came up with a few words and phrases that I really liked and definitely wanted to use somehow. The main thing that I think I struggled with was putting my thoughts into writing. I know what I want to say and what it means but I can’t actually get it out of my head. Overall, I’m so happy with this list poem.

Weeks 4 & 5 (Ashbery, Updike, Madsen) - Each describe one painting/image, but in very different ways :
- Which text did you find most interesting?
- Which one helped you understand or enjoy the painting/image? Explain your choice clearly. 


Although I found it incredibly confusing and exhaustive to read, I really liked the poem - “Ashbery, J (1974) Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror” - as it included phrases that I thought were really beautiful such as “That the soul is a captive, treated humanely, kept in suspension” and “ The soul has to stay where it is, Even though restless, hearing raindrops at the pane, The sighing of autumn leaves thrashed by the wind, Longing to be free, outside, but it must stay Posing in this place”. I’m not sure why but I love anything to do with the soul, anything I’ve read about the soul is always so alluring and connecting and it shows how well Ashbery is at writing.
Throughout the poem Ashbery does look as if he’s losing his focus when writing and he also seems to ramble about certain topics which might not have any relation to the image. Ashbery talks to the painter as if the poem is a letter privately meant for him, there’s something incredibly personal about him using the name ‘Francesco’ as he is more commonly known as ‘Parmigianino’ - Ashbery even calls him Parmigianino at the start of the poem but changes his mind and starts to use ‘Francesco’. I wonder why this is.

Originally I had to make it in Wood again but the workshop wasn't the right environment for me so I knew I wouldn't get it done. 

After talking to my lecturers about it, they suggest looking at using other materials :
Clay? 
Mixed Media?
Metal? 
Foam? 

I was going to choose clay as I had worked with the medium before but for a standing Sculpture, I felt it would be too difficult to execute properly. 

Vacuum forming was suggested to me and I actually thought it could be a lot of fun as I've never used it before and It'd be exciting to see the result.
I had a face that I made out of plaster from my plaster workshop induction so I took that down to the plastics workshop where the technician vacuum sealed it for me, watching the process and seeing all the air sucked out was really cool and I was happy with the result.

Getting the plaster face out of the mould proved difficult as there were lots of little crevices which plaster wanted to get stuck to.
I went to the plaster workshop to use a chisel and hammer which worked really well at breaking the pieces of plaster. 

The vacuum Form itself is clear so it feels boring - I took it to the painting workshop - this means I can get a nice smooth finish on any colour I want to add

Through her work Harrison toys with the relationship between interior and exterior" - Feminist artist gives porcelain dolls an awesomely grotesque makeover, Priscilla Frank

"Here, what should be hard is soft, what should be brittle is flexible, what should be fragile is fleshy, what should be precious is broken," - "The relationship between what is considered to be outside the body and what is believed to be inside." - Jessica Harrison, Artist Statement

To me, her series really talks about the 'perfection' of women and the respect to the female body. "Explores what happens when our expectations of pristine forms are ruptured" -(Priscilla Frank)
I find it eerily creepy yet amazing that the porcelain dolls are all flawless and still posed perfectly whilst they're cheerfully holding their organs, adorning a slit neck, skinned, or are even headless.

"A self-destructive ornamentation where object becomes organ, private becomes public, inside becomes outside." - (Priscilla Frank) 
I really love this quote but I can't pinpoint why, I think it's the idea that these dolls dressed in Victorian dresses who felt the constant pressure of being perfect, having to stick to ladylike manners and always having to be dressed to the nines to all of a sudden having these 'disgusting' qualities to them and no longer looking clean or perfect to the public.

For both drawings, we were told to fold a piece of paper into four sections and then to make a viewfinder (The part of the camera you look through to frame and compose your photo - we made ours using a piece of paper)
Once we had done this, we were told to look in the viewfinder and choose an area of the body that we wanted to focus on.

For the first drawings we would repeat this so we'd end up having 4 different drawings -
- Used Black thick marker
- Model also moved 45 degrees for each one
- 12 minutes for each drawing

1st - (Bottom Right) I chose to draw the models torso as I wanted to try and focus on the details but I struggled because I could see too much of the torso
2nd - (Bottom Left) Once the model moved round, I could only see her knees so I just attempted to draw that. There wasn't much detail to draw but I liked it - It was different
3rd - (Top Left) The model tried out a new pose and I really liked it because It had a level of difficulty. I think I did okay for this drawing, you can tell the model is leaning over
4th - (Top Right) I really dislike drawing heads and faces as I can never get it 100% right but I want to improve

For the second drawing we used chalk which I enjoyed using because I could blend everything as I liked and could work with tone. I wish I had coloured chalk on me though because I think that would've helped me differentiate between the model and everything around her.

I did life drawing during college and I really enjoyed so I did some pieces seperate to that but I stopped throughout the last year until I learned we'd be doing it every week during Uni. 
I find it alot easier to work on a small scale and not have the pressure of trying to complete it during sessions.
 
I created these by first doing a watercolour background, I wanted to use quite neutral colours so the biro on top would stand out.
Then I chose the model I wanted to draw and immediately went in with biro, I didn't want to do pencil lines first as I knew they'd be sketchy and annoy me.

I chose to use Modroc as I knew I could manipulate it however I wanted and would be able to mould it over the base material I use

To actually make my Sculpture, I created a rough base in cardboard so the Modroc would have something to adhere to and so everything would look even. 
I made the dumb idea of covering the base in Modroc first instead of waiting till I had cut out and attached the triangle pieces at the top - this meant that when I tried to attach the triangles to the band with masking tape, the tape wouldn't stick because it had nothing to grip to - I just had to hold the tape in place whilst I put Modroc on top, this worked well but now I know for next time.

Moving on to legs - I was planning on making moulds of clawfoot legs (like you see on bathtubs) as I really liked the intricacy of them but a suggestion was made and it turned out that I thought that idea would be a lot more fun to execute.
The idea was to create weirdly long legs, something that you wouldn't see on a 'trinket' box - I liked this idea because I wanted to add something different to my sculpture without taking away from the intricacy of the main box

The only cylindrical things I had available at the time were paper straws so I taped three together and then I started wrapping Modroc around them to solidify them and make them sturdy so they would hopefully hold up the weight of my base
As the legs were drying I noticed that they were cracking slightly because the straws were wet but also because some bits of the wrapped Modroc were heavier than others so it was warping - I thought that maybe filling them with sand would help

Whilst making my final sculpture, I saw some spare metal rods in the Metal Workshop and I realised that they would work as legs as they would already be heavier than my base - I grabbed three and cut them down all to the same length 
All I have to do now is work out how to attach the legs to the base - Not sure if Modroc would work?

I painted the background the same colour that I planned on mixing into my sand as I wanted them to almost blend together. 
After I had mixed the sand, I started to apply it to the canvas but I noticed that the sand wasn't sticking to the canvas properly so I couldn't work with it as easily as I wanted - I think this is because the sand itself was too wet and there wasn't and even ratio - 
Because the sand was wet, it made the final colour darker than I had it originally.

When I first came across his work, I knew immediately that I wanted to try out his style so I did for a few paintings during the break between finishing College and starting Uni - I was pretty proud of them. 
I did stop for a little while which Is why when I had the opportunity to do one again, I knew who to look at for my main inspiration

  • The handprints are strategically placed to look like the face is actually pushing the board away which I really liked - the skeleton hand added is just for fun as I always love how it looks
  • The skull was to add a pop of colour and I'd seen it on Pinterest previously so I used it as a rough guide - pretty proud of how it turned out
  • "KNACKISH" - the word I was given at the very start of the sculpture practical- I knew I wanted to add a word to my piece (words are common in the pieces I like and have attempted) and I thought a really good one would be the one that started it all - also made the most sense compared to just a random one
  • The eyes and flowers - I was left with alot of empty space when I had finished the hands, skull and word so I had to think of things to fill in those spaces - I came across some images of weirdly shaped eyes and I liked it so I drew my own - I don't like adding flowers to pieces but I always find them to be a good space filler - drew some really quick ones but wasn't happy with the colour so went over with a brighter one 

Overall, I am proud of this piece and being able to put my thoughts onto the actual work and for it to look mostly similar to what I envisioned. I'd definitely want to try this again but with different protruding objects

Before I attached the legs to the base, I knew that I wanted them to look like they actually connected to the base so I decided to add some swirls around it but only going roughly a quarter down because I still liked the look of the exposed metal.

 I struggled attaching the legs to the base piece as they weren't sturdy enough and therefore, it was making the whole thing start to tip over.
To counter this problem, I had some cement blocks from balloon weights and I just attached them to the bottom of the metal legs with lots of Modroc and hot glue which worked really well and they're incredibly sturdy. I did originally have the legs separate but it just wasn't holding so I positioned them into sort of a tripod shape and that held up the base before I had even started Modroccing them together. 

Actually attaching the legs to the base was a challenge. Once I had Modrocced the legs together, I noticed that they had shifted slightly so they would no longer fit flat against the bottom of my base - This meant that I had to cut a hole out of the base piece and slide the three legs in. This did work but I didn't really want to do it as It made a bump in the piece but I just used Modroc to cover the hole.
