My husband and I are planning to remodel our home in Sugar House -- it is a big job.
The problem :

he wants to build a two-story home.

I want to build a one-story home (opposing views).

The stakes were high because we would have to go into debt for the larger home, and we both feel strong emotion about our position. As you can see, it fits the criteria for a crucial conversation.

Using CPR I determined this was both a content (size of the rebuild), and a relational (I want to be heard and he wants to be heard) problem.
Stay tuned for the results!

I had made several attempts to resolve relationship issues with two people before taking the Crucial Conversation (CC) course. In those conversations I came away feeling just as angry and helpless as before the attempts. This last week I decided to approach them again, honestly feeling that the CC tools would not work with these two. They were so set in their ways and too much bad relationship history would make it impossible to improve the relationship. Wow, was I knocked off my pessimistic pedestal. In both cases we shared in the pool of information and that new information unveiled very different people. People who were not trying to be vindictive but feeling defensive and confused by the other's behavior. I feel a little vulnerable on our new relationship path but relieved to be associating with people I came to understand have good hearts and are willing to improve the relationship.

I recently had the opportunity for a number of "crucial conversations" with my supervisor and leaders in my division, as I announced my departure from SLCC. I realized after a day full of these conversations that I did way too much talking and not enough listening. I am sure that effective listening is something that we will be focusing on in this week's session. Until then, listen on ...

Facts, stories, "projecting"?

My mother often says "I'm probably just projecting" when she explains interactions with others which seems very close to the facts vs stories theme that has stuck with me over the weekend. It seems like the whole point of communication is to clarify the 'facts' or learn the other side of the story, and yet many conversations lead to more stories and confusion!
