Technology is Taking Away Real Intimacy

Technology is getting powerful, but as it gets powerful real intimacy is getting weaker. Technologies nowadays are used to store data, pictures, text and audio, it makes you carry files around. It is use complete school works, projects, and to conduct research. It can also speed up learning process for students, because in just a few clicks away their questions are getting answered. People from distances communicate in just a few taps in their mobile devices. But this platform is taking away the real life socialization of people.

Have you ever felt alone, while being with your friends, family or partner? The feeling of being ‘alone together', you are together but also away from each other. This is due to people are using their devices while having get-together or gatherings. While people are eating, they focus more on their devices than the people around them. People even take photos of their food before they it eat, and then edit it while eating. In the Tedtalk of Sherry Turkle entitled “Connected, but Alone”, she mentioned that her daughter invited her friends in their house, but instead of enjoying their time together or playing charades, they are focusing on their mobile devices and not even looking at each other. It is very evident that people cannot live without their cellphones, some even have a fear of not holding it in their hands.

In relevance to fear, people are now afraid of real life communication. It changes their behaviour, since they distant theirselves to people to avoid a real life conversation. Some people is feeling like there is noone who will listen to them, and wish that siri will develop a listening skill. There is this movie titled “Life-like”, it is about humans creating robots to be a human companion, the robot/s will only do the things that their humans taught them. Why do you think the creators of this movie come up with this concept? It is because people are scared of real intimacy.

Technologies such as the mobile devices that humans are using is made for humans to be connected, and updated to their friends, family, and relatives from a distance. Let's keep it this way, let’s listen to each other. Let's be each other's stress reliever and not the cause of stress. In this way the real intimacy will be felt by everyone.
