The Necklace - Financial identity - How she feels she wants to become richer and be spoiled with money but then she looses her friends necklace so she has to go into complete poverty to repay her only to find the necklace was fake

Unknown Girl - Cultural identity - How she is comparing her home country's culture with the western world and how different it is.

The theme of freedom connects the following texts:

Significant Cigarettes - Addiction as a form of escapism to freedom, death as a prerequisite of freedom and the concept of individuality in freedom.

My three texts are linked with the common theme of Freedom, it is presented through the authors/characters needs or the realization of it. Freedom is a powerful feeling and leads to powerful events. Not only is freedom itself a complex subject but its surroundings are as well.

The necklace - In The Necklace, Mathilde feels pressured to put an image of a person who is financially stable. Mathilde handled this adversity with dishonesty, which lead her into extreme poverty. EVIDENCE: "There's nothing so humiliating as to look poor when you're with women who are rich."

Still I Rise - Racism and racist expectations of black women. The poet speaks on her own racist experiences and handles this adversity by fighting against and rising above it. EVIDENCE: "You may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I rise."

Disabled - In Disabled, the main character is viewed as a 'queer disease' which shows society's standards on physical appearance and how people are treated when they don't meet those standards. The protagonist in Disabled feels stuck and 'waits for dark'

All three can be linked through the theme of society's pressures and how this adversity is handled differently by different people.

Disabled - The struggles of a crippled veteran that's had his life destroyed by war.

The necklace - A woman so infatuated with people's opinions on her that it ends up costing her whole youth.

Significant cigarettes - A man that is filled with sorrow from his wife's death but still pushes on to support his daughter's life.

The 3 texts are all linked by grief and sorrow towards the past.

Disabled - he goes through the challenge of coming back from the war and having people treating him differently because of how he looked. " He sat in a wheeled chair, waiting for dark. "

Significant Cigarettes - has goes the challenge of losing his wife (and feeling guilty about it) also moving to a different country to support his daughter. " .... he didn't like to catch the sight of his own reflection, because what he always saw in it was his own guilt at still being alive. "

Disabled, The Necklace and Story of an Hour.
- The representation of reminiscing/reflection and regret.

Disabled: Victim of propaganda – link to how it causes the events of his life, and therefore his reminiscing/regret.
‘In the old times, before he threw away his knees.’

The Necklace: What Madam Loise had to learn and how it led to her regret/reminiscing.

Story of an Hour: After reflecting more about her marriage and time she realised her marriage was not freeing therefore regretting how she got married shortly after she woke up and died.

Significant Cigarettes - The main character Ron shows a strong form of commitment by leaving his hometown in order to send money back home to provide for his young daughter.

The Necklace - When the main character spent over 10 years to raise enough money to buy a necklace for her friend out of sorrow and guilt.

Still I Rise - A Leading woman that fights for her rights and committed her whole life fighting for equality for every black person that has suffered or is currently suffering from all the racism.

All three texts talk about identity, and how it changed due to circumstances. Furthermore, all three texts link to how society would treat them because of these circumstances.

Still I Rise - Talks about how unfair society treats her because of ethnicity (which is a part of her identity). But she utilizes a tone of confidence and ego as she is proud of her identity

Disabled - Talks about how unfair society treats him because he got disabled during the war and how his appearance changed. He uses a tone of regret as he wished he never signed up to be a 'hero' as he expected to be.

The Necklace - Talks about a woman's life and how it doesn't meet her materialistic standards, showing greed, desire, and jealousy. She seems ashamed of her identity as she enjoys showing off, but doesn't have the requirements to do so. She appears to be afraid of how society would treat her if they found out how she was living like.

The necklace - Thinking too much about what other people think, trying to be someone she isn't. always wanting more, not knowing what she already had, until she lost it all, spending her youthful years trying to pay back a phoney necklace.

Significant Cigarettes - The main character Ron willing to start to start fresh in London to earn money for his daughter from eastern Europe

The link between the 3 texts is that the main characters end up in a new situation and the character dramatically change.

1: Goes through the struggle of his wife (feels responsible for her death). Moving to a completely new country and leaving her daughter behind to give her a better life.

2: Poem demonstrates the challenges that Maya Angelou and black people had to endure and go through and even though they go through all these challenges and struggles they will still persevere.

3: Mathilde feels compelled to put on a mask to hide her true financial state, to impress other people so she feels she belongs with the rich people. And proves that if you try being who you're not there will be consequences.

In still I rise maya Angelou talks about the hate and racism she received from white oppressors, as we move through the text, we begin to see her resilience to reach her final goal and destination.

Significant Cigarettes-
In the text Ron moves away from his home to London to find a new life to help his daughter and move away from from poverty. Therefore his identity begins to fade away

An unknown girl-
In an unknown girl the writer shows how the girl torn between her identity of two different nations, as we go through the text, she shows signs of herself from both of her countries.

Still i rise - This poem highlights the adversity faced by black women in the world, the writer Maya Angelou speaks from her personal life experiences when facing the discrimination due to how she's perceived society

Disabled - This poem demonstrates society's disconnection from the details into serious issues such as the war, for example the main character in the poem is martyred due to his new life of judgement because of the disabilities he's acquired as result of the service he provided for his country in the war.

The necklace - This poem reinforces the pressure members of lower social classes feel due to the pressure felt to be respected and valued by peers
