Greetings everyone! Welcome to NURS 500. Winter is here, as is the New Year, and of course, so is the new academic quarter.

I am looking forward to working with each of you in the weeks ahead.

Each quarter results in building a new and unique community within the class for the 10 weeks period that we will all be sharing together. In order to get things started, and to learn a little about each other, please be certain to answer the following in your introductory Padlet post:

1) Where you are geographically located.
2) Let us know which graduate programTrack you are in.
3) Tell us about your past and present employment experiences.
4) Share one expectation that you have for this course that will enhance your nursing practice.
5) Anything else you would like to share about yourself that you feel the class might enjoy knowing.

Also, as we build the community, please feel free to post one of your favorite photos (of you, or your pet, your family, etc). For example, this is a photo from a trip I took to Bolivia in 2011 with a team of healthcare consultants from Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP). As a forensic healthcare clinician of 25 years, my role was to work with forensic psychologists, public DAs/prosecutors and regional court judges regarding enhanced assessment of children exposed to sexual violence and the related judicial process. Given that this course focuses on Health Policy and Legislation, I can tell you that the justice system for women and children who have been sexually or physically abused in Bolivia is severely lacking, and, was one of the issues that I discussed with the judges from across the country whom I was able to provide forensic consultation to. In the photo below, I am working with children in the school room of their Domestic Violence shelter/compound (located in Cochabamba, at over 16,500 thousand feet in the Andes mountain range!). Alpacas were everywhere and I fell in love with quinoa (which is basically eaten at every meal there…and now whenever I see it on a restaurant menu, I simply must have it!).

I look forward to learning more about each of you.

"See" you in class,
Dr. C

My name is Lisa Bonacquisti (the c is silent). Proudly, I live just outside of Philadelphia and happily commute into the city daily for work. Currently, I am the research coordinator for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Drexel. Clinically, I have worked predominately as an ER RN (adult/peds), dabbled on the surgical floor for a year, and was a telephone triage RN for a pediatric hospital. My nursing experience started in 1993, and in 2003 I took a little RN break and assisted a family member in opening a performing arts center. To this day, I think managing a disaster in the ER was less stressful than running a business.

I am enrolled in the nursing education track, and my goal is to do just that - teach future nurses. After reading through the first module, I really feel this class will empower me to become more politically active regarding health care. I know I've always had it in me. I am hopeful this course will provide me with the courage to move forward.

Oh, the title has everything to do with my starting a master's program...yup, this is the third start; however, I know I am ready to move forward this time. I also need to show my teenagers that learning is a lifelong process.

Looking forward to getting to "know" everyone in class.

Lisa B

My name is Kira Parkin, I live in South Jersey and commute to Philadelphia for work. I am enrolled in the Nursing Education track, I have always loved to teach, and tend to take that role on the floors. I knew I needed to jump into a MSN education program to get more direct experience and credit for what I love to do.

I have been a nurse since 2013, starting out as a primary care nurse in the outpatient setting. I switched to work in PCU at Cooper in Camden where I was able to get a variety of adult/tele experience. I knew my heart was in pediatrics so I made the jump. I currently work at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in the Newborn/Infant ICU. I have been there 2 years and love the many experiences I have been given. I truly learn something new every single day.

I can definitely say that my experience and knowledge of politics in health care is slim. Although, it can be nerve-wracking to jump into a subject that I am not totally comfortable with, It will be great to be able to expand my knowledge on something that in this day is so crucial and important to us as nursing staff. I hope these ten weeks will give me the confidence to open up conversation about health care politics in the workplace, and help others like myself understand the importance.

I am excited for this new journey of learning! Good luck everyone!

Hallo! My name is Christine Rosebaugh and I live in Philadelphia (East Falls to be specific), and I will be beginning the Nurse Anesthesia Program full time next January.

I recently moved here from Pittsburgh to take a job in Northern Delaware where I work as a Cardiovascular ICU nurse. Prior to taking my current job, I worked in a Neuro ICU for 2 years in Pittsburgh (LOVED it!) and as a psychiatric nurse, specifically for schizophrenics and manic bi-polars for one year (kind of loved it but didn't want to die young).

I can honestly say that anything related to government is extremely foreign to me. The worst grade I have ever received for a class was in government and economics in high school, and I have not touched on the topic since. With that said, I have reached a point in my life now where I have a curiosity in how health care works and how the government's decisions affect me and the care I give and look forward to learning about something outside my comfort zone! (My husband who is always in the know about current events was impressed that I was researching a government site).

Here is a picture of my husband, fur baby and me in Arizona for Christmas this year. Fur baby goes by Cricket Rocco Dobby Bartow, Crix for short.

Hello everyone, My name is Laura Evans and I currently live at the beautiful Jersey Shore in Howell, New Jersey with my husband, 2 year old son James and our shih tzu dog Molly. I am currently enrolled in the Women's Health NP program at Drexel and this is my second semester of the program.

Currently, I work as a Mother/Baby RN through the Barnabas Health System at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. It is a huge teaching hospital here and I have gained valuable experience not only as a postpartum nurse, but also with newborns and occasionally floating to Special Care Nursery. It can be very busy though as our hospital currently delivers between 5,000-6,000 deliveries a year. I absolutely love this specialty and have been doing this for the past 6 years now. However, when I first came out of nursing school I worked on a telemetry floor for a year and absolutely hated it before moving onto obstetrics.

On an interesting note, prior to becoming a nurse my undergraduate degree was in political science back in 2007. Since then I will be honest in saying I have not really looked much into government or politics in the least. My husband is more of the government enthusiast as he currently works in state government. It is my hope and expectation that after the completion of this course I will be able to have a rekindled interest in government/politics again, especially those pertaining to healthcare. With so many changes on the horizon in regards to health care policy, it is beneficial to understand how these policies and legislative measures will impact us in nursing leadership roles. Looking forward to a great semester and meeting all of you! Below is a picture of myself and my son James when we went pumpkin picking this past fall.

Before working at Jefferson I was working in the ICU at Chestnut Hill.

I am originally from Michigan so the east coast is still new and exciting for me.
Hello, my name is Dale Springer. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA but currently live in Collingswood, NJ. In 2006, I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in business management, and then returned to school to earn my BSN in 2014 through Drexel’s ACE program. After earning my BSN, I worked in Hahnemann’s MICU before obtaining my current job at HUP in the Cardiothoracic SICU. I now am working towards becoming a CRNA. To be perfectly honest, I have little knowledge on health care policies that are currently being introduced in our government, and I am excited to gain awareness on legislative measures that directly affect healthcare on not only a national level but also a personal level. Before becoming a nurse I earned a masters level captain's license through the US Coast Guard and chartered a parasail boat in Ocean City, MD during the summers and the USVI in the winter. My license allows me to commercially operate 100 ton vessels. I am an avid outdoorsman, and when I have free time I try to “find myself” in the middle of nowhere. My travels have lead me to the backcountry of Alaska, the pacific northwest, and all over the eastern US including my fair share of the Appalachian Trail. My girlfriend and I have a vacation planned for Costa Rica this February and are excited to get some tropical hiking in! I've attached a photo of myself, my girlfriend, and our child from our last backpacking trip in Dolly Sods, West Virgina.

I currently live near Long Beach Island in a town called Manahawkin but my boyfriend and I are starting to house hunt and we're looking to move a little closer to my work. I've been working in a community hospital in Freehold, NJ on a Med/Surg unit for the past two years. I love the floor and my co-workers and the surgeons I work with which sometimes makes me think I should have done the Acute Care NP track for a program instead of the Family NP program I'm currently in.

I graduated with my BSN in 2008 from Ramapo College in NJ. Many of my fellow classmates have gone back to school and to become a Nurse Practitioner was always a goal of mine so it was only a matter of time before I would go back myself. Unfortunately when I was in my undergrad my school was in the process of changing their program so I've have little experience in the classroom setting with healthcare and politics. Their new program had a class for it. Out of the classroom I still have little experience with politics, but I am excited to see how nurses can impact policy changes.

Attached I have a photo of myself and my boyfriend, Tim, at my best friend's wedding this October.

I was born on the island of Jamaica and raised in N.Y.; I currently reside in Westchester, which is about twenty minutes north of NYC. I started nursing with my associates’ degree from a small hospital based program, The Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing. That program provided me with a strong education and clinical skills which I continue to utilize in my career. While working on a Med-Surg unit at NYP-Lawrence Hospital I obtained my BSN and then transferred to the medical I.C.U.. The operating room and anesthesia have always been extremely appealing to me; therefore I decided to apply for nurse anesthesia school. I have been fortunate enough to be accepted to Our Lady of Lourdes NAP, which is in conjunction with Drexel University.

My expectation from this course is to learn more about the legislative process of health care bills and their passage into law and policy. These decisions govern many of our actions when caring for patients so I believe it is important for us to know the origin of the rules which we adhere too.

On a personal note I love to eat and travel. I migrated here in the 1980s, a mother of two young adults and a grandson. I am enrolled in the MSN/EDU track. I graduate from Temple University with BSN in 1998 and have worked as a Registered Nurse for 20 years. I then obtained a MLS/Healthcare Compliance degree from Drexel School o f Law May 2017. My years of clinical practice as a staff nurse, Travel nurse and Strike Replacement nurse exposed me to the many weaknesses of the industry as well as the many things I love about my career. I am find that I love to teach and have participated in several preceptor program to help new nurses transition to independence in their nursing duties. I chose this program to prepare me to become a professor. It is my ultimate and final goal to be able to be proficient at every aspect of nursing so that I can one day competently impart my knowledge and skills to future nursing students.

My degree and studies in Healthcare Compliance was triggered by the attitude I see in many of my fellow nurses who don't take their compliance to health policies and procedures seriously. I believe that this is and essential aspect in our duties as we take care of those who entrust us with their persons, belongings, and information. As I age I also realize that my personal relationship with my God has helped to heightened the ethical aspect of my practice as well as how I operate in my every day life. This I can share with nursing students as they embark on the path to interacting with patients, peers, families, and management. I am not exactly new to teaching. I expect to complete this program feeling confident and enriched as I move on to a Doctorate degree in nursing.

Godspeed everyone. We are going to get through this.
Introduction: Veronica Brown

Hello everyone!

My name is Veronica Brown. I was born and raised in Philadelphia. Last year I purchased my first home in the Fishtown/Kensington section so for now I am here to stay! This is my first class ever at Drexel University and I am excited to be a “Drexel Dragon” now. I have taken some graduate courses at La Salle University, my alma mater for my undergraduate nursing degree that I obtained in 2012. My first year working as a nurse I worked in a pediatric setting, although I loved the position I wanted to become an adult trauma nurse. I currently work full-time at Albert Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia in the Surgical/Trauma ICU (SICU) and as a per diem nurse at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in the critical care float pool. I’ve been fortunate enough to work in many types of ICUs, PACU, and even the ED. This exposure has helped me think long and hard about what track I would like to study in an advanced practice role. I have chosen CRNA and am fortunate to have been excepted to the Our Lady of Lourdes program with Drexel.

From this course I hope to gain a new interest in policy and politics. Especially, the contemporary issues that are directly related to health care. I hope this course helps me to branch out of my comfort zone and discuss issues that I normally would not find myself in conversation about.

I recently adopted a dog I named Winston! He is a rescue pit found on the streets of Philadelphia by a nursing co-worker. We went through the Mercer county shelter to have all his shots & such completed. He is a quirky dog, loves to cuddle, and has brought so much joy to my home!

Here’s to a great semester!
& of course a photo of Winston my dapper dog.

Hi everyone,

My name is Eric Rayburn and I am originally from Sarasota, Florida but currently live in Philadelphia,Pa. It is stereotypical but I grew up playing golf and going to the beach on the weekends. I moved here in 2004 so I am accustomed to the cold weather we seem to be experiencing on a daily basis. I still enjoy playing golf when the temperature is above 32 degrees and now skiing when it is less than 32 degrees. I went to Drexel University from 2008-2012 and graduated with a BS in Health Sciences. I then attended Thomas Jefferson for nursing school and graduated with my BSN in 2015. I have worked in the CTSICU at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for the last three years. It always seems stressful but the learning is endless. I am starting my journey in CRNA school. I look to gain more insight into the policies shaping today’s healthcare and how they change my approach to providing care to patients at the bedside.

Best of luck in everyone's endeavors!

My name is Dawn. I'm from Maine, and this is my second attempt at beginning my work at earning my graduate degree. I have been working as a psych nurse for almost all of my nursing career, which is about 10 years. I have had little to no interest in social policy or being involved in health care legislation, and I'm ashamed now that I am so ignorant about the processes involved in developing and implementing health care policy. I just actually left a job I found very fulfilling, fun, and challenging, because of the ways that our organization is administrating policies and protocols, ways that seem to undermine the overall mental health and behavioral goals that are appropriate for our patients. So now I feel like I'm trying to play catch up in a huge, overwhelming, way. My children are grown, both living at home (sort of) while commuting to each of their colleges. I'm taking a little break from psychiatric nursing and am working in an acute rehabilitation hospital at this time. I know I will go back to the mental/psychiatric healthcare setting, as that is were my heart is...but the break is doing me good, and going back to a med-surg setting is very challenging and full of learning.
I'm really looking forward to the challenges I'm sure await me in this class, and good luck to everyone!

My name is Tasha Swanson. I am from Memphis, TN. I am currently enrolled in the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Program here at Drexel. I have been a nurse for 14 years. I started my nursing career as a certified nursing assistant. Within a month of becoming a CNA, I started LPN school. I became an LPN in 2004. I went back to school to become an RN a couple of time before I was successful. Finally in 2012, I had fulfilled my dream of becoming a registered nurse in an associate degree program. Four years later, I graduated from the University of Memphis, with my BSN in 2016. I also completed certification as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant (CLNC) in 2016 as well. Now, here I am again. I have worked in outpatient clinics- primary care and OB/GYN. I have also worked in the hospital setting in telemetry, pulmonary, medical-surgical areas as well as labor and delivery/mother-baby unit. I am currently working as an L&D/Mother-Baby nurse. I have always wanted to work in labor and delivery since I was in high school so I have fulfilled one of my dreams. I love seeing the "little people" come into the world. Since I don't have any children, this is also my way of having children for about 12 hours and giving them back to their parents. My expectation for this course is to expand my knowledge about health care bills and how they are made into laws. I know that there is a process and by learning that process I will be able to understand how to apply this process in my everyday discussions regarding healthcare policies.

Hi everyone! My name is Alexandria, but everyone calls me Zsa Zsa and I've been a nurse for four years. I'm originally from Northeast Philly, but grew up between Bucks County and the Jersey Shore. Prior to becoming a nurse, I was a competitive figure skater. I started skating when I was 3 and continued to compete until I began college. Training and competing for skating moved me all over, from North Jersey to New England, even internationally to Poland. In 2010 my competitive career ended and I enrolled in nursing school. During the four years of school, I worked at a hospital in South Jersey as an ED Tech and in 2014 graduated with my BSN from the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, I'm living in the Harrisburg area and work in the SICU at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. I am set to start CRNA school at Our Lady of Lourdes and could not be more excited! In my free time, I still like to get back on the ice, get together with friends, and during the winter I enjoy snowboarding. During this course I am hoping to gain a better understanding of how policies are established and how they are utilized daily in our practice as health care providers.

Hey everyone! My name is Ashleigh. I was born, raised and just purchased my first home "at the beach" just like Christina in this thread, except I'm just a tad more south; right outside Ocean City NJ. I have been a nurse a little over four years now, and my entire career has been spent in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I attended undergrad at Liberty University in VA where I received my BSN, then returned to my home town. Aside from working full time at Children's, I also work part time at Atlanticare in Atlantic City, NJ in their recovery Unit. Like a handful of you in this course, I have started the journey of CRNA school through Our Lady of Lourdes. It's been a few years since I've been in the online learning setting and I'm excited to get into it. I'm looking forward to truly understanding the dynamics of how health care bills/laws are created and upheld, especially experiencing their impact firsthand with our careers. Good luck in this course and all others you're enrolled in!

I married my high school sweetheart and have two beautiful girls; Ava 4 yrs old and Rylee 1 yr. I've been a nurse for just about 7 years. I currently work in an ER at a level 1 trauma center, but I also have experience in an ICU and a telemetry floor. Right now I am working toward my masters degree. I would like to educate; either as a clinical nurse educator in a facility, or teach new nursing students. I precept new nurses and I realized that I like to teach, so I figured I'd go for it! This is only the second online class I've taken so far, so I am getting used to it and getting myself back in the groove of completing school work on top of my hectic schedule. I am looking forward to this class and learning more about the legal side of nursing. In my spare time, I love being with my family (2 sisters and 6 nieces! Yup, no boys!) and traveling. Disney world is our all time favorite place, we go just about every year. My oldest daughter has already seen Mickey and friends at Disney four times :)
Well, it was nice meeting everyone! I look forward to a great semester with much to learn! Good luck everyone!
Amanda

Good evening from Houston, Texas! My name is Kendra Folh and I have been an RN for 16 years with a background in critical care obstetrics and labor and delivery. I am currently a project manager on a multidisciplinary innovation team in a quaternary academic hospital in the Texas Medical Center. My focus is on obstetrics and pediatrics. I have had the privilege of working on collaboratives, such as the IHI Perinatal Community and the Children's Hospital Association, where I have had the opportunity to learn about performance and quality improvement in regards to the Triple Aim Initiative. I am currenlty enrolled in the MSN Innovation track.
I am currently on the steering team for the March of Dimes' first Perinatal Safety Center where we are focusing on safety culture in the obstetric and neonatal field to decrease maternal and infant mortality. I am also involved in the emerging Texas Collaborative for Healthy Moms and Healthy Babies, so I am looking forward to gaining more insight on nursing impact on policy and reform.
I have been married for 20 years and we have 4 kids, 20,16,14 and 7. Therefore, I am excellent at chaos management. In between work, church, sports, school, and scouts, we travel when we are off.
