When the middle school began, there was a confrontation between doing zero tolerance and not. Made us ask the question, do we enforce this because it is easier?

We wonder as a faculty where we are going and how to create new policies. In the past, there is recognition that zero tolerance was abused.

We struggle how to live into new ways of doing things when we lived a certain way for so long.

It may have been the way we did things, but we need to question if that was right and the trauma and the spirit murdering that came out of it. And how we do apologize for that.

Policy connects to the students we serve and the context we are in now.

We need to figure out if are policies now are indeed zero tolerance or not. Have we moved away from it? Are we okay with the term? Do we need a new term for what it is we do?

Race and Economic Opportunities

There are clear economic inequities, many of which are caused by racism. There are a lack of leadership opportunities (that come with higher paychecks) for Black Pittsburghers. We compared this to other cities, like Atlanta, where there is a critical mass of a Black Middle class. We also discussed the importance of a safety net - it is incredibly hard to take healthy risks if you have nothing to rely on if it doesn't work out. We also discussed how a history of redlining and enforced segregation based on race adds to this, as well.

We are moving out of this. We as teachers are trying to get to know our students, to address the root issue, rather than the behavior. This also helps in getting to know our students.

We discussed how students' hierarchy of needs are not always met, especially when they leave TNA. Especially right now with COVID, mental health struggles are a huge concern.
We also talked about how to discuss these manifestations play out in fundraising. How can we frame fundraising in a way that shows students who are full of potential but may just need certain supports in place to help that potential come out (rather than portraying our families with deficits).
