Table Tennis Nation - Transforming the Game of Table Tennis

A graduate of Tufts University with a Master's of Arts in Economics, Tony Ettinger went on to earn a Master's of Business Administration from Dartmouth University’s Amos Tuck School of Business. He leverages his training to serve as Senior Managing Director of Financial Services Investments at KCK LTD in New York City. Outside of his work, he maintains an interest in table tennis as a Co-Founder of Table Tennis Nation.

Table Tennis Nation got its start when Marty Reisman, a famous New York City table tennis player, met Tony Ettinger and discussed his frustration with the new sponge-based paddles, which had changed the game by allowing unreadable spins. Ettinger encouraged Reisman to redesign the standard sandpaper paddle with 11 plies of soft wood with graphite. Thus was born Table Tennis Nation, which created a new paddle that truly reflects a player’s ability.

In addition to manufacturing paddles, Table Tennis Nation has revolutionized the game with its three-on-three matches called Brawls. Bars and clubs sign up to host these competitive, fun-filled social events, and Table Tennis Nation provides the paddles and organizes the brackets.

To learn more about Table Tennis Nation, visit TableTennisNation.com.

Setup and Rules of Platform Tennis

Tony Ettinger leads KCK's investing in Financial Services as a Senior Managing Director. In his free time, Tony Ettinger enjoys playing platform tennis.

Developed in 1928 in Scarsdale, New York, platform tennis has become popular as the only racquet sport played outdoors in cold weather. Matches take place on a raised aluminum deck that contains a playing area that is one-third as large as a standard tennis court. A net 34 inches high stretches across the center of the court, while a 12-foot high frame wrapped in chicken wire contains it.

Players hold solid composite paddles that include 87 drilled holes that are three-eighths of an inch wide. The platform tennis paddle weighs 13.5 ounces, whereas a standard tennis racquet would weigh no more than 11.5 ounces. The ball, made of solid rubber with a soft cover, is slightly smaller than an average tennis ball, at 2.5 ounces.

Most games take place in a doubles format and are scored similarly to tennis, though there are a few key differences. For one, once a ball lands in the court, competitors may then play it off of the wire screen before returning. Additionally, while servers have only one chance to hit the ball over the net, serves that touch the net before falling into the opposing service court can remain in play.
