In the book, Amir says, "To my knowledge, the only time Baba had ever gone to the doctor was the time he'd caught malaria in India." (pg 153)
I feel that Baba tries to hide the fact that he's sick because he doesn't want to appear weak. Baba talks to Amir about respect towards other people in other cultures they have respect towards and he wants Amir to act like a man a pay ypur respect to this man "He has nang and namoos. nang. namoos. honor and pride." Baba  doesn't want Amir to embarrass him in public.

This shows that Baba probably thought Amir was going to tell everybody that Baba has cancer, so maybe that's why Baba tried to hide that he had cancer. Baba didn't want to let Amir know because it would stress him and destroy him. Amir had to wait two weeks to find out if Baba is was dying or not. The author demonstrates gender roles in this chapter when Amir ask Baba if he can ask the general for his daughters hand in marriage. "I want you to go to khastegari. I want you to ask General Taheri for his daughter's hand"(pg.138 PDF book). The book haves Amir play the role of a guy who fall in love with a woman and has trouble talking to her until he finally gets the courage.

Baba tries to hide the fact that he is sick because he has an image he’s trying to uphold with not just Amir but also the he public. When Amir is telling Baba he is wished he’d try out chemo, Baba is disgusted, “And one more thing. No one finds out about this, you hear me? I  don’t want anybody’s sympathy” (Hosseini 157).
