I love asking students about activities they participate in outside of school (sports, weekend trips, video games, things they weren't necessarily looking forward to...). I found this is a great way to maintain relationships with students!

I think it's super important to follow up after students share parts of their lives with us. Ask how the game went, how the new dog is doing, how they're adjusting to having a new sibling, etc. Following up shows students that we are authentic when we inquire about their lives.

When I know that a student has a certain interest in something, I will ask them questions about it and start a conversation with them about it. I find they love to tell you about hobbies, sports, etc... that they are interested in and its a great way to find out more about them.
