This is due to their priority of cultural perseverance, and we think the best way to support that as a teacher would be to include the parents in students learning. </p></li><li><p>Powerful Practice 3: (pg. 151) Encourage parents to tell or read stories to their children in the home language</p></li><li><p>What does the practice involve? How can you take action?</p><p>It involves sharing cultural heritage, and bilingual  development through the use of storytelling. </p><p>"Sharing stories can be used to build necessary background knowledge</p><p>while also facilitating English language development", </p><p><br/></p><p>"Sending dual-language books home to be read in the home language before they are read aloud in English in the classroom will impress parents with your commitment to helping students continue to develop the home language, bootstrap their linguistic skills, and involve parents in the education of their children".</p><p><br/></p></li><li><p>Based on our chosen question and powerful practice, we believe that bringing the parents into the learning environment and giving the opportunity to share aspects of their culture through storytelling could support their child's bilingual development while preserving their cultural identity. </p></li><li><p>It is important to support the families of ELLs because fostering a sense of community within the school allows for families to feel connected to each other and benefits the overall educational experience of ELL students.</p></li></ol><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

(pg.157)</p></li><li><p>• Listening to music in the home language</p><p>• Attending community events</p><p>• Seeing a variety of home language representations</p><p>• Giving opportunities for the student to develop both languages at home and at school</p><p>• Encourage parents to teach new vocabulary and speak in longer sentences.</p></li><li><p>This practice supports this ELL family as it aims to help bilingual and multilingual families maintain and build their proficiency in their languages in school and at home through specific strategies. </p></li><li><p>Supporting the families supports the students, it engages them and brings them closer to community, it allows them to understand and implement the strategies learned at school at home and connect their school-home life.          <description><![CDATA[<p>As Neepin child's teacher we want to support their home and school English and native language development. We thought powerful practice B3 would be the most relevant to support the Neepins. This practice allows us to seek to establish a two-way dialogue in which they can share their culture with the class and reinforce it at home.</p><p><br/></p><p>Question B: We should always seek to provide an open dialogue with the guardians and provide space to meet outside of the school setting if that has trauma associated with it. </p><p><br/></p><p>Powerful practice: Encourage parents to tell or read stories to their children in the home language.</p><p><br/></p><p>We can do this by encouraging the school to buy and provide dual-language as well as native-language books for the Neepin family. This allows the student and their family to engage with literacy regardless of their English ability and provides a space for them to bring their culture into the classroom. </p><p><br/></p><p>Check out <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://goodminds.com">goodminds.com</a> for a large selection of curated Indigenous books</p><p><br/></p><p>It is always important to support all students and by extension their families to allow for an optimal learning environment.
