What are three things you learned from the DEI work this year?
What are two challenges you experienced or questions you have regarding the topic of building cultural humility?
What is one idea or topic you would like us to explore together next year?

WHAT WE'VE LEARNED Professional Closeting was a new term for most of us. learning what Cultural Humility is and how it surrounds biases. It is a life long journey. Our conversation topics have provoked questions and initiated conversations where people in the past have been apprehensive about simply starting the question. In addition to race, sexual orientation has been a new topic of conversation. Diversity includes more than race, it really is differences in lifestyle.

WHAT HAS CHALLENGED US. Finding the voice to say what needs to be said and remove the pressure of feeling judged. Leading by example and helping them understand that though they gain most of their background knowledge from home and how to understand what is acceptable/appropriate to say at different developmental stages.

WHAT
DO WE WANT TO COVER TOGETHER NEXT YEAR? Is it possible to have designated time for the FACULTY to dive deeper into our backgrounds of each other to experience the difficult conversations so we can then model the conversations with students.

1. I learned about myself and the importance of pausing when I don't have the answer right away. It's okay NOT to know everything, and it's OKAY to ask for help when I don't have the answer. Also, asking questions is VERY powerful. At times, my adult brain would automatically jump to a different space than where my students were at, and once I asked guiding questions I learned more about what they were thinking.
2. One challenged I experienced was the lack of personal connection via Zoom, and understanding the cultural experiences of some of my co-workers.
3. Support with facilitating age appropriate conversations around DE&I topics.
