you literally cannot see the words as well when they arent in direct contrast to the background. this relates to serena williams because she is put in a position where she is pretty much exclusively compared to white women, and people unnecessarily point out her race and make her feel marginalized.

this piece of art poses an interesting take on the condition of a racial minority. As the print becomes more and more stressed, the spiral and toll that being a minority can have is unveiled. As for Serena, a fantastic athlete and tennis player, her situation is extremely representative. Tennis is a historically white sport, and her skin tone makes her stand out far more than her ability.

She is a black woman in an industry dominated by white athetes, coaches, fans, and writers. Because of this, her behavior is subject to all of the biases of the people around her.

The repetition and progressive smudging to me in the "I do not always feel colored" part signals deep denial to me. The phrase is repeated as if it is a person telling themselves it to make them feel more comfortable. The smudges could be from tears, as the writer is pained from repeating a fallacy, trying so hard to make it true. The smudges—which are black on a white background—could also represent the color of the person's identity spilling over. Their own color won't allow them to feel not colored.

the words disappear as the page gets darker. However, the background is not completely black but a mix between black and white, and it shows that distinctions between race only happen because we put it there ourselves. It points towards race as a social construct.

I think this relates to how Serena's overall dominance of the game means so much more than other's as she stands out. Each time she competes, she is surrounded by an environment of mostly white, making the tensions extremely high, leading to incidents like 2004/2009.

"I feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background." This line stuck with me because Serena plays in a sport dominated by a white population. Similar to Serena Williams, Tiger Woods competes at the highest level in a sport dominated by a white population. Both of these athletes have left such an impact on their respective sports.

The fact Serena feels easily identifiable in a white-dominated society demonstrates society's failure to truly integrate people and understand people of different backgrounds.
