She didn't do drugs like the rest of the gang members around her. This caused them to think that Mona thought she was better than them or too good for them. In Mona's life as a cop and working at the station she was already an outsider because she was a female working in a male dominated profession. The way she talked and dressed made her different than everyone at the station. Even though Mona wanted to leave Frank because of his alcoholic and abusive ways, she felt like she couldn't. This is because she needed him for financial support and wanted her sons to have a father figure. Mona seeked shelter at a home for women with abusive husbands, but she still ends up with Frank afterwards.
