Mona shows the hardships of an abusive relationship and how she overcame them. A moment that really solidified this was when mona said, "He left, and I told him to not come back. this was the end of our marriage." Her relationship with Frank played a massive role in making Mona the person she became.

Being born and raised in a dangerous environment made it hard for Mona to succeed where most people either end up in gangs, jail, or dead. Mona went through many obstacles during her life to become successful. Mona said, "Almost everyone doubted that I would ever become a cop, but the only skeptic that mattered was myself." This really shows how Mona persevered through her whole life.

Not giving in to pressures of society

Throughout Mona's school life and adult life she was pressure to do things. She was pressured to do drugs, join the gang, and quit on her dream of being a cop. Even with all these things, Mona for the most part never gave in and let society decide what she does with her life. An example of peer pressuring Mona faced was by some random guy at a party who said, "Everybody else does....maybe you should try it, y'know? It might loosen you up a bit."

Living as an outsider

In every aspect of Mona's life she was an outsider. She didn't do drugs like the rest of the gang members around her. This caused them to think that Mona thought she was better than them or too good for them. In Mona's life as a cop and working at the station she was already an outsider because she was a female working in a male dominated profession. The way she talked and dressed made her different than everyone at the station. This made them think that she was a gang member and a trouble maker. Mona talks about the comments people would make when she started working at the station, she says, "Searching the files for old traffic tickets, I sometimes heard police officers muttering about me, wondering if I was a spy or making unkind comments about my background and appearance."

Mona shows struggles of being a mother in an abusive marriage. Even though Mona wanted to leave Frank because of his alcoholic and abusive ways, she felt like she couldn't. This is because she needed him for financial support and wanted her sons to have a father figure. Mona seeked shelter at a home for women with abusive husbands, but she still ends up with Frank afterwards. When Mona does eventually leave Frank it was hard for her to provide on her own.
