My understanding of the proverb, is that children need to look to their parents as guidance and learn from them. However, the proverb isn't specific to the mother and child relationship. Anyone can be influenced and learn something by someone.

This proverb is found in many places of the book. One example is when Nwoye tries to impress his father. He knows how he should act and behave in his village because, he has spent a lot time with his father. He has learned from his father and by observing other men.

I agree with the interpretation of the text, and think that it holds very true to the real world. People learn by watching what other people do and mimicking them. Especially young children, who are always in the monkey see monkey do mind set. Since humans are a social creature, it is natural to mimic something that you think is right to do.

I also think that picking something so basic as CHEWING is also a HUGE part of this proverb. Kids are watching their elders-- even the smallest actions have huge impacts on their life!

We also see a lot of resentment in even the smallest aspects of who Okonkwo is. Nwoye has very little tolerance (I can't necessarily blame him) for who is father is!

I would like to see this final idea developed more....Yes, we learn from those that are in our lives, but how does that impact society? What are the benefits of this proverb? For example, the cow learns to eat-- which is very important. What does it mean when we learn something that is "not important" or that is destructive?
