Both refused to admit any wrongdoing and proclaimed their innocence right up to the time of their deaths, by the electric chair. Julius Rosenberg was accused of heading a spy ring that passed top secret information on the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. Ethel was later arrested for conspiring with Julius. This was frightening to the American Government because they had spies leaking information inside the government and they didn't know if there were others. The order established the first general loyalty program in the United States, designed to root out communist influence in the U.S. federal government.

Many of the accused were blacklisted or lost their jobs, although most did not in fact belong to the Communist Party." The beginning of McCarthyism came when Senator Joseph McCarthy made the announcement that he had "a list" of names of people in the government that were communist sympathisers. For years after this, he lead investigations through Government groups like the CIA and the state department. After McCarthy’s reelection in 1952, he obtained the chairmanship of the Committee on Government Operations of the Senate and of its Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. This immense fear that he had created only took advantage of the fear among Americans during the Cold War that communism was taking over the country.

The Cold War influenced many books as well and authors began to make action filled spy stories. Hiss was never convicted for spying or espionage, but he was convicted for perjury or lying under oath. This conviction probably wouldn't have happened is Hiss wasn't accused of being a communist supporter.
