Donmoyer_Austin_Career Preparation_Project Search: New Pathways for Young Adults with Disabilities

The following video clip from Project Search describes the multitude of hands-on work experiences students with disabilities receive at a local hospital. Project Search is a one-year high school transition program that provides skills training and internship opportunities for young adults with disabilities between the ages of 18-22. Throughout the clip, students are presented with various roles at the hospital, including preparing maternity rooms, stocking supplies for patients in their room, cleaning the medical equipment and so much more. Students were given responsibilities based on their ability levels and strengths related to specific tasks. One of the most important parts of the success of Project Search is the training students receive through job coaches and local school system employees. The goal is make sure students understand their tasks, how to effectively perform these tasks on a daily basis. By blending rigorous academics and hands-on job skills training, Project Search is taking Career Preparation to a new level and ensuring students will be able to successfully hold employment after graduation.

Schirmer_Rachel_What Can CareerOneStop Do For You?

CareerOneStop is a career resource center for diverse employment seekers. The site is aimed for anyone, including people with disabilities, seeking a career either for the first time or to make a career change. The video is an overview of what resources the site has to offer. This video clip would meet criteria for web based research as well as career interest assessments as outlined as some of the career awareness activities on the fact sheet by New Ways to Work (2008). The resource I have used the most with my students are the career videos. You can select videos based on industry or skill set. Each video is 10 minutes or less and offers a view into what skills are needed for the career, what kind of training and education is required and basic job responsibilities. This has been an informative resource for my students to get a deeper look into their career interests and dive deeper into creating a transition plan and goals for what the student would need to do to work in the desired field or career. It has also been helpful for students who are having difficulty identifying a career interest. I have a basic rubric where the student writes if they like the career, want to learn more, or do not like the careers. This helps students narrow their focus and become more aware of what career they would be interested in and start building a path and plan towards their goal.

There are also free interest assessments on the website such as the O Net Mini Interest Profiler and the O Net Interest Profiler on My Net Move. As noted by Trainor, Smith and Kim (2012), "assessments afford students with disabilities a clear understanding of themselves, including their strengths, preferences, interests and needs."

References:
New Ways to Work (2008).

Donmoyer_Austin_Career Preparation_Special ed. students learn leadership, job skills

The following clip depicts high school students participating in the TLC Community Classroom Program, which provides students with skills they need to successfully enter the workforce. These skills include filling out job applications, interview preparation (appropriate dress, resume building), and identifying student strengths with potential job placement. Many of the students who participate in this program are exposed to a variety of work experiences, which allows students to broaden their skill sets related to life skills and job skills. In the article by Trainor, Smith, and Kim, it is quoted as saying " A vision toward career development as a window into adolescents’ futures, however, requires balancing academic work with a diverse set of opportunities and experiences that allow adolescents with disabilities to explore a variety of settings and skills." This video demonstrates a diverse set of experiences, allowing students to explore what they are successful at and where their interests lie.

Bastarache_Emma_Career Preparation_ P.A.C.E. Overview

This following clip is about a two- year post- secondary program at National Louis University which is intended for young adults with multiple intellectual, developmental and learning disabilities. This is a program that is incorporated in the college setting and this program integrates academics, along with career preparation, life skills and social skills to help prepare students for independent living upon completing the program. A step to helping students gain independence skills is the students get the opportunity to live on campus in the dorms just like their age-appropriate peers. These dorms are consisted of a furnished single bedroom with a kitchen and a living room. Students also get the opportunity to learn how to use public transportation to help them get to class and work. The P.A.C.E curriculum involves education/training to help a student be employable and ready to work upon completing the program, develop independent living skills, and age-appropriate social skills. The program follows 4 objects that include: Functional academic courses, employment preparation, independent living skills, socialization and community living. A typical schedule for a student is consisted of academics during school hours with classes such as, "Money Management I" or "Employment skills I", but there is also non-school hours which include things such as, "student life activity" or "club" which gives the students the opportunity to spend leisure time with their peers. This program is a great opportunity for students with disabilities to gain career preparation because it ties learning the academics to help the gain employability skills, but also gives the students the opportunity to receive the hands-on opportunities as well.

Schirmer_Rachel_Rethinking College
ThinkCollege.net is a website dedicated to providing resources for students and their families, educators and other stakeholders to bring awareness to the possibility of college for all students. The website is aimed at students with intellectual disabilities however there are resources that can support educators, students and parents who have questions about how having a disability does not have to be an obstacle in achieving a post-secondary education experience. One of my favorite resources in addition to the movie is a list of colleges that have programs for students with intellectual disabilities. At many of the colleges, the programs offer a college experience that supports students in accessing education as well as providing support for career development. The video interviews and shows multiple students who have gone to college and their outcomes. This video opened up conversations for my students about what the difference is between high school and college and how to access student support services to request accommodations, get support from a tutor, and careers services. You can also download a viewer guide to create lessons and engage students in thinking about college and how college can lead to better career opportunities and life experiences. Although the article by Trainor et al. focussed on career development, thinking about the themes explored such as social capital can also be developed through a college experience. Throughout the video, you will hear the students, professors, and families talk about how inclusive the environments are that they are in and how it has helped them grow and challenge themselves to achieve their dreams. You can also see strong evidence of self determination in the film. These students have goals that they want to achieve by going to college and they speak about how these goals are helping them shape their futures. Lastly, going to college provides students with an authentic experience. Trainor et al (2012) note " A vision toward career development as a window into adolescents’ futures, however, requires balancing academic work with a diverse set of opportunities and experiences that allow adolescents with disabilities to explore a variety of settings and skills." (pg.17) College is an authentic opportunity that allows students to balance academics with other opportunities such as work or on-campus activities.
References:
Trainor, A.A., Smith, S.A. and Kim.

Bastarache_Emma_CareerPreparation_PittsburgDisabilityEmploymentProject

Pittsburg disability employment project for freedom is a summer program that serves young adults that are finishing high school are preparing to enter the work force. The purpose of this program is to assist the students ages 16-21 in learning the soft skills that will help the students receive the job they are applying for. It is a class made up of a small number of students with disabilities to learn soft skills. Soft skills are personal attributes that help a person learn how to interact effectively with their bosses, employer, and co-workers and to live and work cordially with these people. This program focuses on helping the students with their employment goals, job readiness, communication, being successful in a job interview, filling out resumes and job applications and skills that will help the student be successful in the work place in the future. The skills being taught go down to the smaller skills of learning how to shake your hand and make eye contact while doing so. A lot of the students that are in the program do not know a lot about job interviews or how to communicate in a work place setting. These soft skills that students are learning will help with career preparation and learn them to being successful in the career they are choosing and help them learn how to be a part of a team.

Students compete in 2-3 job skills as well as a job interview and resume competition. Preparing for and participating in the competition allows students to gain awareness of the skills underling common entry level jobs. Students, teachers and parents gain understanding of which types of jobs the student is good at and and also which types of jobs the student likes the best. This fits in well with the definition of Career Awareness which state that students should narrow their focus and find more info on their skills and interests.

References:
Hall, T. There are several different ways to find these answers like attending a job or career fair, participating in work based learning experiences with a mentor or researching jobs on the internet.

The interest inventory is completed by the student. The answers and interests are refined in this video. The main features we use with students who have completed the interest inventory are the descriptions of education needed, working conditions, average salary or wages, etc. - those facts we ask out students to check in the exploratory phase of careers. I also like this because as the video shows with a few more key strokes you can see why it was selected as an interest and how that career compares with another career you might be interested in. This is not an inventory or exploration tool for your life skills students but can be used personally or in class discussions with those who are on the higher level of low incident disability

Schirmer_Rachel_Virtual Reality Helps Those with Disabilities_Post
This clip highlights how career exploration has helped both a student find an internship to learn more about her strengths, preferences and interests as well as how it will help others explore a career virtually. Through virtual reality technology, students exploring careers will be able to assess whether they would enjoy working in certain types of environments. The technology would allow the student to virtually navigate the work environment to get a feel for what the workplace might be like. Virtual reality would fall under a classroom simulation domain for career exploration (New Ways to Work, 2008).
Virtual exploration could potentially remove barriers such as transportation issues with setting up job site visits, lack of staff to supervise job site visits, limited access to a wide variety of work site visit opportunities due to rural setting as well as time constraints that may exist in the student's schedule as they are trying to balance career exploration with academic or on-campus activities. It could also help students identify what type of accommodations they may anticipate needing to advocate for prior to an onsite job visit.
Johnson_Kim_Career Exploration_Virtual Reality Helps Those with Disabilities_Clip

One of the main goals of the program is for students to gain the highest level of independence and prepare themselves to be fully included members of society. This program aligns closely with the Career Development Continuum, which defines Career Development as an opportunity where " youth are supported by and provided role models and guidance from families and adults in their communities and neighborhoods. Youth are provided with experiences commensurate with their knowledge, skills, and abilities. These experiences are also compatible with their age and stage of development. In a comprehensive career development system, youth are exposed to a full range of careers and employment opportunities."

Mischel Smith_Theresa_Career Awareness_Strong Interest Inventory

Interest inventories are a great way to help students connect to possible careers based on their strengths and interests. Students often are aware of only a small number of career options that the often interact with in the community or that they know someone with that career like a parent. Completing interest inventories can help point them in the direction of careers they may not have thought of and help select ones that are a better match for their skills and abilities. This matches well with the definition of Career Awareness which talks about students having a wide awareness of possible careers and narrowing down their focus.

Mischel Smith_Theresa_Career Awareness_Career Clusters

Missouri Connections (created by the Missouri Department of Education) has a 29 video series on different career clusters and jobs included in each cluster. The videos do a great job of explaining a different career cluster and the careers that would fall in this cluster. This video series works best for schools that have access to the Missouri Connections assessment system but could be used by teachers in other states at well. The video series would require a substantial time commitment but would help make students aware of a whole range of career paths in a variety of industries. This matches well with the goals of this phase of making students aware of a wide range of career paths.
