I used to think that relational trust was one of several factors in a child's experience of my classroom . . . Now I think that it is a foundation for a children feeling safe, being successful, and learning deeply in my classroom. I also think it is the outcome of many decisions, small and large, that I make as a teacer.

I used to think that relational trust built in large moments of impact that were caused by activities you did in the classroom (freedom writers style). Now I think that relational trust is about the moment by moment pauses you take to get to know your students. Every small interaction shows the students who you are and builds trust.

When it comes to relational trust, I used to think that trust was hard to cultivate with all of our students, especially some of our advisees that "challenge" us. Now I think that even though we don't have to like all of our students, we have to love them and we can build trust intentionally by being authentic, being present, and being patient.

I used to think that meeting students in advisory first thing in the mornings was the best plan but now I think that it's crucial to optimize not just how much time is spent as an advisory but WHEN you meet. Maybe mornings, mid-day, and end-of-day is essential too since, as humans, we all show up differently depending on the time of day.
