So in chapter 8 focus on research. It's a guide for us to prepare for our speech delivery. It also help you manage your fear. The author said that stage fear is more common. For research, he said we gather and look for sources, and social media. So we can make a proper speech. Seiler also said we need a main thesis, so the audience can engage the story better. One tip is write a script with you in case you forgot what you say.

After I read chapter 8, what can I do is use research from the internet to find sources. That way I can prepare for my speech with some evidence. Also, refer back to the sources can help me remember what is my speech about.

Chapter 8 is mainly about gathering information and finding supporting resources for the material your speech is on. It touches upon credible resources for researching information as well on tips and tricks to execute your best research. In this chapter multiple different sources are listed such as: the library, interviews, social media, yourself, and the internet.

I think the information that this chapter gave is actually really useful. Research is the basis of a good speech so it’s definitely important to know which sources are credibles; and also obviously helpful to have tips on how to do research depending on the topic. In this chapter there is also a list of a bunch of different “function indicators” of URLS and their meaning. This is definitely helpful because in the future I might know which sources I can trust or not. This chapter definitely gave good advice on how to do research as well as which sources to take information from.

Chapter 10 talked on delivery methods and managing speech anxiety. The symptoms and causes of speech anxiety are brought up, as well as how to treat it and the cultural differences. Then the chapter switches over to talking on delivery methods such as: impromptu, manuscript, memorized, and extemporaneous. It also brings up the vocal and physical aspects of delivery.

I think this was one of the most important chapters and also one that I connected to the most. I struggled with severe anxiety so I already knew reading the title that I would be able to relate. I definitely experience many of the symptoms listed, but am glad they talked about treatment because I feel like I have hope that I can get better. I also feel like the delivery portion of this chapter is important too. What is the preparation of a speech without the delivery? Delivery is very important because even if you say the exact same words, just the delivery of the speech can completely change how it is conveyed to the audience.

- Hailey T.

The chapter talks often about using materials you gather to construct a well made argument. Recognizing the importance of identifying a topic or more specifically a thesis is important for your information tools. The chapter brings up sources of information to use when gathering, such as social media, libraries, online sources, etc.

Chapter 10 talks about the techniques of speech delivery. Keeping the audience engaged and interested in what you're saying so that the focus of your speech is not overlooked.

Chapter 8 discusses the research component in creating a speech. While the delivery is important, you can't make an impactful speech without doing thorough research on the topic. Furthermore, having good insightful research helps overcome fear. If you are knowledgeable on your topic and have great evidence and research, you will be more confident when delivering the speech. Research, research research!!

Chapter 10 talks about the actual speech delivery, and what can happen while giving a speech. It shows techniques to engage the audience such as an enthusiastic speaking voice and eye contact. The chapter also talks about issues such as nerves one may get while delivering the speech. Certain techniques such as slowing down and taking pauses can help relax yourself if you feel these nerves. It also helps to slow your breathing in order to help you relax also.

-Ari Chertock

Seiler’s chapter 8 is about the importance of including good information and where and how to gather such research. As the evidence and information provided are meant to support your claim, so without a good structure the credibility of the paper is questionable and the overall message may fall short. Thus, individuals may find information in common resources such as the library, books, and the internet. However, some examples of sources that many do not consider are social media or quotes from testimonies and interviews. This factor is extremely reliable when you want to hold someone to their words. Then one must consider what type of information is included in the paper. For example, if the paper is more logical, the use of definition and statistics can help reinforce the claim.

The information I gained through this chapter will be extremely helpful during this course. As I not only had I learned about additional resources I can use for future assignments. But it refreshed my memory on the different purposes of each type. On some occasions, students forget the importance of having strong evidence from reliable sources; because as stated in the textbook “information you gather becomes the backbone of the speech” (Seiler 193). Without the influences of supporting evidence, the logical mindset of readers will be unconvinced by the paper and left wondering if it is at all true. Therefore, this chapter will be important towards my success in this class because I will be able to identify if my paper is well supported enough and contains relevant information from trusted sources.

Chapter 10 addresses the fear of public speaking and how to manage the anxiety when delivering a speech. First, the importance of practice is highlighted, as the written word and oral speech are quite different so one needs to hear the difference. Additionally, the chapter addresses how one may be more uncomfortable public speaking or outspoken, based on their background and what they have been taught. For example, if an individual was raised by parents who discouraged their children from speaking their mind. Then they might grow up shyer to public speak, especially regarding a topic that conveys their perspective. Furthermore, symptoms of anxiety are evident as one’s heart will beat faster, have a harder time breathing, etc. Overall, the fear of public speaking is a challenge that is tough to overcome; but with commitment, one can reduce the influences of the symptoms.

I think this chapter addresses a really important occurrence for students in a communications course. For not everyone is raised with the ideology of being confident and comfortable when speaking to a crowd. However, as human beings, whether it is at work or in school we find ourselves in that situation. So I must recognize the influences of speech anxiety, and understand that regardless of its presence, I must overcome it. I think the most important part of this chapter for my success is how to address speech anxiety. For there is no medical cure; therefore, it calls upon the presenter to ensure that they are prepared and understand the material they are presenting so that it lessens the chances of mistakes occurring. Additionally, making sure one is confident in themselves, as self-confidence is important to success because if you believe you are going to fail you will. Through this chapter, I will be able to ensure my success of public speaking for this class and future projects, because I am knowledgeable on how to combat speech anxiety to ensure a good presentation.

-Madison C.

I agree with the first half of chapter 8 to a great degree. I agree with their ideas of getting a head start with your research and developing a research plan. I don't know how much information I could find through social media but I don't think it's as much as I could find through Google. To highlight that point, they said I could research as much as I want to the point where I have too much information. To say that to interview someone is to get information is a great idea, but one I don't have much background in. I think that chapter 8 gave great ideas on how to gather information. The second half is a little different for me because it's not describing something I'm already doing. I think that they made great attempts on describing what a statement is and how it should be clean and professional, but didn't make much effort in stating how to back up the statement with evidence.

As to what I can take away from chapter 8, I think there's a lot I can take away from it. I'm already fulfilling the part where you develop a plan and get started early and I think that's a great contribution to finding out what information you want to take away from your research. As to going to the library to find out information, the Laney library has its own database in the library that has tons of information from a wide array pf sources. If I'm ever stumped finding things from google, I'll probably go there to find what what I need. I guess I need to focus on what Aristotle said, and that's "Every Speech has essentially two parts: A statement and it's proof."

Chapter 10 has basically everything I need to think about when writing for my speeches. From what I've seen from my own speeches, I don't need as much help overcoming speech anxiety. The method of speech delivery has always been from a memorized perspective but they say there are other methods as well. I don't think an impromptu speech would go over that well for me. I also agree that there are things you should think about when presenting from the vocal aspects to the physical aspects. Presentational Aids have been kind of hard to work with due to COVID but I know that presentational aids are a great way to demonstrate your abilities as well as engage the audience.

There isn't as much I think I could take away from this chapter but there's a lot of little things that I think if practiced over time could result in a great presentation. What I do think I could take away from chaper 10 is the part about the vocal aspects. From what I noticed in my speeches sometimes the volume would go down and sometimes cut out completely. I could raise the volume of my voice a little and increase the volume in the videos and increase the intelligibility as well. Also I don't think it would hurt to use more gestures and increase my body movement to increase the attention from the audience.
-Larry

Chapter 8 presents various methods to gathering content for a speech. One of the most common sources no doubt is of course the internet. Readily available to all with a computer and access to internet, there is endless information at one’s disposal. It also mentions how social media can also be a source for certain topics, as it is relatable in most of our lives. Additionally, it notes that in person interviews are also a source of information. I found it interesting that the textbook points out that the speaker themselves is a source too. Libraries are of course another source of information.

Another topic chapter 8 covers, is how you can use research directly in your speech to support and clarify ideas. The obvious include illustration, quotes, analogies, and examples. However, sometimes providing definitions and explanations to the topics covered in a speech can be an aid as well. Sometimes topics are complex and not everyone may be familiar with the acronyms and jargon. Statistics are an excellent way to visually demonstrate a point.

Chapter 10 offers numerous methods of delivery. It first refers to speech anxiety; its causes, its effects, and how to address it. The chapter then moves on to Types of delivery. It informs us of the styles of each type of speech and when to use it, as well as its purpose. Chapter 10 subsequently proceeds to tech us of characteristics of speech. This includes vocal quality, intelligibility, grammar, articulation, and vocal variety. It describes the use and impact they may have in the effectiveness of a speech.

The chapter also covers physical characteristics of speech delivery. It mentions personal appearance, body movement and facial expressions. It notes how gestures and eye contact can paly a role in how the audience connects to the speaker. Chapter 10 additionally suggests the use of delivery aids. The purpose of delivery aids is to provide clarity, interest, and make the speech memorable.
In Chapter 10, we found ways to manage public speaking anxiety and efforts to better deliver a speech. To help manage speech anxiety, we can first understand and identify ways that one can manage that apprehension. By acknowledging and understanding the causes, we can better find ways to treat it. However, it’s important to note that speech anxiety has no immediate cure, but rather simply ways to reduce and control it so it will not interfere with one’s presentation. Certain methods to reduce said anxiety can include mediation and systematic desensitization. Once one can overcome or better control their anxiety, we move onto the methods of delivery. There are several ways to deliver a speech including an impromptu delivery(no preparation), manuscript(reading speech word for word), memorized delivery, and extemporaneous delivery( speaker has a speech but includes spontaneity). Other than the method of delivering your speech, there are certain vocal and physical aspects that can heavily impact one’s presentation. Volume, pronunciation, grammar, articulation, and vocal fillers all can change how one views your speech vocally. Physically, body movements, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact are crucial for a good speech. Additionally, presentational aids can help by allowing a speech to be understandable and memorable. It can also provide support by helping with delivery. There are many types of presentational aids such as CGI, video clips, real objects, and much more. Lastly, practice makes perfect.
While Chapter 8 focused on the form of a speech itself, Chapter 10 placed its efforts within how the speech is performed. I found this to be incredibly helpful as I have speech anxiety and a fear of public speaking. After reading this chapter, I will use certain calming methods to attempt to reduce my speech anxiety for better speech deliveries. Additionally, I liked how the text mentioned vocal and physical gestures. I knew mostly about physical gestures, but I do struggle a lot more with vocal aspects. For example, the book mentions to limit vocal fillers which I do subconsciously a lot. Having read this chapter, I have found ways that can help control my speech anxiety and will continue to practice to hopefully create a good presentation soon.

It starts by developing a research plan and being selective about materials that will enhance your own knowledge as well as the readers'. Different sources of gathering information can be from the internet, social media, interviews, or libraries. It is important to state a clear purpose before starting your research in order to know what direction your research will lead to.

Brief examples, illustrations, and analogies are three kinds of examples that will clarify information for the audience. In addition, definitions and statistics provide critical background for an audience to understand your topic deeper.

Chapter 10 looks at managing anxiety and delivering your speech. Some people may experience speech anxiety which is a response from your body's biochemical changes, or communication apprehension which is an anxiety syndrome among individuals who either consciously or unconsciously remain silent. Some things to remind yourself is you're experiencing any anxiety, almost everybody has anxiety, think positively, practice, be prepared, and believe in yourself to succeed.

There are different methods of delivery from Impromptu, Manuscript, Memorized, or Extemporaneous. No matter the form of delivery, it is important for speakers to have certain vocal and physical aspects of delivery. Physical aspects include your body movements, gestures, eye contact, and appearance.

In the chapter 8, the author illustrates how to develope a research plan, how gather information from doing researches on a topic, and how use credible and relevant sources and evidence to support our points of view in a speech. In the step of planning, we should be selective in choosing information sources to expand our knowledge and pick out a topic. the next step is to collect the reliable information related to the topic we chose. The final step is to organize all the ideas accompanied with evidence or definitions clarified.
In the chapter 10, the author shows the strategies and methods of managing our stress and anxiety during the presentation. The effective common way to control the anxiety is to practice and prepare as well as to retain a positive attitude towards change. When making a presentation, we should focus on vocal variety, body language, facial expression, and eye contact. We also need to use presentation aids to enhance our presentation quality ad the better outcome of conveying contents to our audience. (Ngoc Dang)

Carlos Flores, Chapter 8 & 10 analysis.

Chapter 8 of Seiler's book focuses on the research part of a speech, the information gathering and how to use this acquired information. It starts of by bringing up one of the first steps that someone goes through for getting ready for a speech and that would be developing a research plan. The chapter states that there various forms of information sources. This research information can come from the Internet, Social Media, Interview, the Library, and even You (yourself) all of this sources count as an Information Source. It goes on to explain why the research and information gathering part of a speech is important and it's because it helps as leverage to support and clarify the presenters ideas and position of their speech. To summarize chapter 8, it represents the importance of getting prepared with the information needed to be ready for a speech. It's the first step I believe to completing a speech, the part where the person forms his speech with the ideas and evidence to support it, while showing the reader tips on how to research and gather their information. What I take from this chapter will be the new sources where I can gather information from, I used to only do online research but this chapter provided more sources that I didn't know counted.

Chapter 10 of our course textbook is about how a person can deal with their anxiety and apprehension when actually delivering the speech. This chapter was actually very interesting for me because I can suffer from some type of something when doing a speech or presentation, whether that is nervousness and stage frightened. The chapter went on to talk about the symptoms that someone can get when doing a speech, as well as providing a chart associated with the behaviors of anxiety when doing a speech. But the author also provides ways on how a person can treat their speech anxiety. Then moving on to the methods of how to deliver a speech, and there are four methods being Impromptu, Manuscript, Memorized and Extemporaneous. I take quite a lot from this chapter, from the types of speech delivering to how to deal with anxiety while being in front of a crowd. I felt very connected to this chapter because presenting is not my best aspect but this chapter tackles very important facts about speech anxiety and behaviors.

Chapter 8 covers the multitude of ways one can collect content when preparing a speech. As expected, the most common source is utilizing the internet. Taking advantage of the seemingly limitless amount of information from the internet is a very effective way to gather content before constructing a speech. Another source of information can come from in-person interviews as a more direct source. A more traditional source for information, as mentioned in the reading is do get information from a library.

While chapter 8 covers where to get information from, it also goes over how to then integrate the research into the speech itself. By integrating the research into the speech, it can help to clarify and also validate the ideas being discussed. Another way to help with clarification in a speech is to give definitions of some of the more complex topics and expect that the listener is not knowledgeable in the topic that the speech is about.

Chapter 10 goes more into the actually delivery of the speech itself. One topic covered in this chapter is speech anxiety and how to overcome it to give an effective speech. Keeping with the underlying deliver topic in this chapter, chapter 10 discusses the various types of delivery styles and when to use each one as it pertains to the type of speech that is being delivered.

Chapter 10 also goes into the verbal characteristics that go into speech delivery. Along with verbal characteristics, chapter 10 discusses physical characteristics such as appearance, gestures and even facial expressions. Another aspect of delivery mentioned in this chapter is the use of delivery aids. These are not necessarily required, but can be utilized to help clarify and make a speech more memorable.

- Cameron Lockard

Padlet response from Kalie Tong

Chapter 8

This chapter discussed the importance of having a strong research plan to increase knowledge on the topic and how to get the audience interested/persuaded in speeches. To start, research involves understanding what criteria the teacher/event is expecting and thinking about the direction you want for the speech. It’s advised that students should give themselves plenty of time for the assignment and gather more information than they think they’ll need. At the same time, students should think about “quality over quantity”. As such, they should think critically about what types of credible and relevant information/evidence they should include - examples that the audience can relate to, testimonies, and stats to emphasize a certain problem. Using this research plan involving various sources, students can support their main points and be confident in their message.

From this chapter, I learned more about the importance of finding a suitable topic where I can find plenty of sources. This is important because the more sources we have, the more we can

verify the information we are finding and ensure it’s credibility. This chapter also brought up the use of library materials and article databases when we want to access more information. I’ll be sure to give this a try when I want advanced searches and specific details that the internet can’t provide. Furthermore, I struggle with balancing my logos with sufficient pathos. It makes it challenging at times to keep the audience interested in my messages. To improve this, I should try more hypothetical or illustrative examples to give everyone a vivid picture of my message and keep them interested.

Chapter 10

This chapter discussed the importance of making a strong delivery and how to do so. This chapter explained that speech anxieties and communication apprehensions can be resolved using systematic desentization. By imagining optimistic results, being familiar with the audience and presentation surroundings, students can be more relaxed when delivering speeches. It is also important to mention that even good speeches can be ruined with a poor delivery and as such, practice is necessary. When delivering, students need to consider how to use vocal quality, pacing, gesticulation, and facial expressions to increase their pathos. It makes students seem more sincere, natural, and confident with their presentations. Other things students should consider are presentation aids that can leave an impression or act as an interesting type of evidence.

From this chapter, I learned a good delivery comes from positive visualization and practice. To gain more confidence, I’ll be sure to be prepared. I usually use notecards but to sound less mechanical and more natural, I should learn to be more flexible with my wording and focus more on other delivery aspects. I intend to go over my speech by parts and memorize impactful sections like my hooks or when I’m introducing examples that the audience will be interested in. For these parts, I intend to make eye contact often and use my voice to stress statistics or the consequences of the problems I’m introducing. Furthermore, I’ll try out new things such as including a simple prop to demonstrate my points. It’ll attract the audience while getting my point across in a simple way.

This chapter emphasized the importance of how information is 'gathered and used,' with regard to establishing credibility and providing useful content in speeches.

The chapter started with the importance of how information is gathered. Specifically, the book emphasized that information should be got from a variety of credible sources. This means that Wikipedia would not necessarily fit that category. However, Wikipedia could be used to find more reliable sources, as the webpages for Wikipedia lists the sources at the bottom. Additionally, how the information is used is incredibly important. It can be used to establish credibility, inform the audience, and support an orators claims, arguments, or opinions. Overall, Seiler's Chapter 8 thoroughly described the importance of information in communication, such as speech.

As an extension of Chapter 8, Seiler's Chapter 10 focuses on speeches. More specifically, how to mitigate speech anxiety when delivering a speech. All of the points made in this chapter are centered on one primary idea: Systematic Desensitization. That is, a relaxation technique which is designed to help reduce overall anxiety surrounding speeches. This could take the form of imagining a positive outcome when giving a speech, or allowing oneself to simply get comfortable with public speaking.

Additionally, there are many other techniques which-when applied-can be stepping stones to ultimately becoming a good communicator/public speaker. For example, practicing your speech many times until it is memorized, could help.

Marella Pedersen
The content of Chapter 8 on Research of Seiler’s textbook provides methods and approaches for acquiring information through research for your speech presentations. The chapter begins with a list of explaining important steps that should go into developing a research plan. These steps can help you with thinking critically and be efficient about choosing information for your speech topic.

Chapter 8 also provided a number of resources that are available for researching from personal experiences, libraries, interviews, social media and the internet. In addition, this section gave helpful tips about how to research and identify the reliability as well as credibility of these information resources in which I learned a few new ways to look at information.

In Chapter 10 of Seiler’s textbook it describes ways to manage speech anxiety and effectively deliver your speech. The beginning of the chapter gives examples of the different symptoms a speaker can experience during presentations and reminds us of how everyone experiences a certain level of anxiety before giving a presentation. Another section of the chapter gave insight to some of the reasons why people experience speech anxiety which helps those who can relate with these reasons.

Chapter 10 went over ways to reduce speech anxiety and provided exercises that every student will find helpful. The chapter included methods of delivery and the physical aspects of what goes into delivering a speech. It’s a good reminder to be mindful of how a speaker can use vocal ranges and variety to have sufficient sound quality in a speech. The chapter concluded with a number of ways to prepare for speech including different ways to practice that I found very useful.

Chapter eight discusses the best ways to develop and research topic for a speech. They advise to always have a topic in mind and to look for sufficient evidence to support your claims. One should also make sure that the information we are getting from the internet is valid and is a recent article. Then the speaker has to address the audience with the data to help give context about the evidence for authenticity. I think that all of the tips given to us in this chapter will prove to be very useful for my speeches. I think that timing in advance and taking steps day by day is a much more efficient way of managing speech writing. Instead of waiting last minute and having to all in one day can cause of lot of stress and lower grade due to time.

Chapter ten discusses all the different types of anxiety people get when delivering a speech and shows us ways to cope with it. The chapter shows us that feeling nervous before giving a speech is very common and even people who have to perform or give speeches often still get nervous. One thing the chapter recommends is to prepare by practicing the delivery as much as possible. Going in without ever reciting the speech can be a problem because you may not be organzied leading to mistakes, which causes a lot of anxiety. Giving the speech beforehand in front of someelse can be a great help. This chapter will definitely help me out because I am someone who gets anxious when giving speeches and talking in front of others. Although I feel as though I get less nervous nowadays, all the tips in the chapter will be useful.

Diego Ortiz

Chapter 8 has very important and valuable information in-regards to gathering and using information. In order to have valuable and informative information one has to do the important tsk of gathering information from the internet and libraries, these two valuable resources provides a student a better chance at retrieving information. After one has gathered the information, one has to take the time to put all the new information in a way that conveys what the speaker is trying to present. Also, one has to see the information they have gathered is legitimate and adds value to the subject that one is searching.

Chapter 10 is very valuable for people who struggle with presenting in front of others. I found that the anxiety portion of the chapter was enlightening to because I struggle with anxiety during presentations. From personal experienced I have learned that taking deep breathes calms me down, not all of my anxiety but a decent amount in order to complete the presentation. The chapter also discusses about body movements, body movements are the biggest tells that someone is anxious or is fine with presenting. Once a person who struggles with anxiety uses body movements and gestures to their advantage, it makes it that much easier to present.
I. Del Toro

After reading chapter 8, entitled “Selecting a Topic and Connecting to the Audience,” by William J. Sieler, I learned how to choose a topic, go from general to a specific topic, and narrow the topic in such a way that it connects to the audience. The most effective way to communicate is to have something. There are several ways to find topics that interest you. Next, brainstorm all of your ideas, using the various media platforms to discover some engaging topics. Then, test out your topic—is it narrow and appropriate for the assignment and the listening audience. Finally, determine your purpose and thesis. Communication involves connecting the listeners. The more you know about the audience, the more you will be able to hold their attention. Research allows you to know how to appeal to your listeners.

This chapter has changed my thinking about speeches. I must say, I had a different understanding about speeches. I thought of them as part of a course requirement, but I learned that speeches and presentations are part of the expectations of many jobs. So, giving speeches goes beyond this course. Wherever I work, I might be asked to communicate to others in this way. Also, I noticed that speech organization is similar to the way one organizes an essay. A speech, like an essay, must include a thesis statement and supporting facts. If I am not excited about my topic, I may not be able to interest listeners.

I learned the details of how to organize a speech after reading chapter 10 by William J. Sieler. After narrowing the thesis, the speech will need to cover the most important parts of the topic in an organized way.

The introduction and conclusion are ways to captivate the listeners and give them a summary. Outlines are constructed to keep a speech organized.

This chapter tightened up my thinking about how to present the material of my speeches. The body of the speech covers the main points in the best order to get the content over to the audience. The introduction to a speech is like a trailer to a movie; it covers the entire speech as brief as possible. The conclusion is a wrap up of everything covered. I found that I need to work on my outlines, specifically preliminary and presentational. I have heard and watched speeches where the presenter was not engaging because the content was disorganized. I learned it is important to know the material, have content that is well-organized, and engage with the audience through eye contact, interesting visuals, and body movements that flow with the speech.

Christian Toeleiu
In chapter 8, Making connections assists understudies with making connections in their every day lives, convey all the more adequately, and prevail in our steadily evolving world. Creators William Seiler, Joseph Mazer, and Melissa Beall balance an intensive yet direct clarification of fundamental standards with a strong hypothetical establishment, supported by the most exceptional examination. Therefore, students can be able to apply the things that they have learnt form the chapter in their real lives. Communication is something that cannot be avoided in all aspects of life. Every thing in this world is accomplished through communication.

Making connections enables people carry out their daily activities effectively. This is achieved through knowing how to communicate effectively and create friendship as well as bring an understanding among people. Goog communication leads to great achievements since people are able to communicate well and understand each other well and a lot it helps in solving conflicts among people. Being able to communicate well is one thing applied by mediators since they are very important in mediating between two conflicting parties and, make them come to an agreement. Thus, this is a very important and useful course since of can be applied in the day-to-day life. In communication comprehension the most extreme type of discourse uneasiness, a tension disorder related with one or the other genuine or expected correspondence with somebody. The author expresses an unwinding procedure intended to diminish the strained quality related with nervousness. The author presents this in chapter 8 of the book on how an author can be able to develop a research topic speech.

This is a very important aspect since it can be applied in so many fields. This is mostly important in interviews where a person is expected to express themselves through expressing themselves as well as their ability to make speech in front of an audience. Also, when making audits at work and board meetings, people need good techniques of speech making and speaking to be able to communicate effectively.

I found it helpful that chapter 8 defined the different types of supporting information you can use in a speech. Categorizing points this way helps to visualize the structure of a speech, and will make it easier to add variety where it's needed. There are also lots of little tips throughout the chapter that seem surprisingly powerful, like rounding off numbers or taking the time to explain things. I thought it was funny how some of the suggestions included not procrastinating and not over-doing your research.

I think the way the book introduces anxiety in chapter 10 is a bit dramatic and could add onto existing anxiety at first. It's interesting to learn about how a fear of speaking can develop. The suggested methods of overcoming anxiety sound useful, and I'm especially impressed that meditation is recommended. Describing all of the details of delivery the way the book does can help students understand what to expect when they're due to give a speech. I didn't know until now how particular body language gets, even considering its importance in a presentation. I was also surprised at the level of strategy that can be involved in preparing visual aids for a speech.

Overall, both chapters have revealed much information that was seemingly hidden in plain sight.

Bryan Valadez
In chapter 10 it talks about on different methods on how to manage your anxiety when you are giving a speech. One of the main anxiety is called communication apprehension and this is when an individual decides to remain silent. This is develop at a young age due to not being able to communicate or get punished when you try too. The way to battle this is when the person find the problem on why they develop anxiety. Again we do put a lot of pressure on ourselves due to always trying to be number one to get praised instead of failing and being ridiculed in front of people.

There are plenty ways to practice and control speech anxiety and one of them is systemic desensitization . This is a relaxation technique to reduce the feeling of tension that correlates with anxiety. Another method to cope with the anxiety feeling is to meditate. Meditation will help you relax and focus on the tasks you like to accomplished.

The chapter goes on and talks about other method on delivering your speech. You can develop a manuscript, memorizing, or even be extemporaneous . Meaning giving the time to find facts and prepare carefully the speech. It explains on using graphs to back your information and use physical movement such as body movement, eye contact and gestures to show interest in the topic you are explaining.

The textbook of chapter 10 is about handling stress, pressure, and anxiety. To summarize, I learned many tips to help reduce my anxiety before I can be delivering speeches. Like I said before, bring some water with me, take a break, listen to music can help me get the better use of making the speech delivery.

I also learned 4 ways of speech delivery which are impromptu, manuscript, memorize, and extemporaneous. I must be sure to choose which one is important for the audience. With practice over and over, I can greatly reduce stress and anxiety over time.

Chapter 8 describes and condenses the ability to gather and use information to our advantage. This research skill is valuable in our daily lives to make accurate and intuitive decisions. I believe that this chapter is very useful in breaking down the subsequent factors to gathering information. This chapter further reinforces my idea of gathering information from the described resources such as media and people.

In chapter 10, Seiler speaks upon the ways the people could manage their anxiety when delivering any form of communication. This chapter has shown compassion towards anyone who struggles with public speaking and being in the spotlight which shows me that again we are not alone. The compassion in this chapter paints the need to be patient with yourself and to practice as much as you can to manage your emotions. I plan to apply this these lessons to the course work to improve the quality of my work.

Chapter 8

Chapter 8 is all about developing a research plan and finding the right, credible sources. It talks of figuring out what “supporting materials” your speech needs, and where to find them. Gathering information is uber important but it has to be from a good source. The internet, yourself, social media, interviews, and the library are listed sources. The internet and social media must be used safely because there are many lies contained within each. I think this chapter is a good read because many people don't think of themselves or interviews as possible speech sources. They also give good tips on how to do research, for example, beginning your research early, taking notes, maintaining a bibliography, etc. They also mentioned testimonies which I thought to be pretty interesting.

Chapter 10

I found this chapter very informative because it speaks on how to manage anxiety when delivering a speech. I used to be so fearless about public speaking when I was younger. But as I have grown, so too has my anxiety, and it has become pretty hard to not feel uneasy speaking in public. They go through discussing symptoms, causes, how to manage, and how to treat speech anxiety. Systematic desensitization is a technique that was mentioned to help reduce anxiety, which I will definitely be trying. This chapter also talks about methods of delivery such as impromptu, manuscript, memorized, and extemporaneous. It also covers the physical and vocal aspects of delivery.
- Hailey

While it is no secret that speakers face anxiety while performing a speech, this chapter focuses on how to overcome the fear of public speaking to help attract an audience by informing you of different types of delivery method such as Impromptu, memorized, and extemporaneous delivery. Making connections with the audience, this chapter teaches the speaker hot to use vocal and physical aspects of delivery to help intrigue the audience. Also using presentational aids to help enhance the speakers presentation.
Although I haven’t used the presentational aid in neither of my speeches so far, I can say that this information has been very helping in presenting my speech in front of people. I’ve learned that I like to use the memorized delivery when presenting my speech so it takes me a few days to get it together, but when I do present it; the flow of the presentation is worth while. I am now aware that when speaking that my audience is the ultimate judge of my effectiveness of my speech so I have taught myself to very very vocal and clear in everything I say to help my readers understand my perspective.

Chapter 10:
This Chapter discussed managing and overcoming speech anxiety. It talked about the symptoms that come with it, along with how to treat it. These things can be helped with cognitive and behavioral strategies. It's important to know it can be controlled. This chapter also talks about the different methods of delivery and the appropriate uses for each one like, impromptu (for a more casual setting), manuscript (often used by politicians or teachers), memorized (presentations), and extemporaneous delivery (public communication situations). Vocal and physical aspects of delivery were discussed for a more effective speech as well. Good vocal delivery includes vocal quality, intelligibility and vocal variety. An interesting voice will make the speech more appealing to listeners. Visual aids and presentation software are good not only for the speaker, but also to help the audience feel more engaged. Slides for the presentation should be more straightforward and easy to read. They should not take away from the speech itself. Of course, all of this would be effective if you practice! Practicing in front of other people, and listening to their suggestions/constructive criticism can help you solidify your speech. Practicing can help you see what areas of your speech can be improved.
-Kayden Sanchez

Defining unfamiliar words briefly for your audience was another helpful pointer. The importance of testimony in speeches for both the listener and speaker is what I valued most out of this chapter. If you do not believe your speech or say it was convincingly how can you persuade an audience.

A lot of people who suffer from this phobia have had this issue since youth and either correct it or avoid it. This Chapter also gives suggestions for delivery methods like the extemporaneous approach where you have your notes but you improv every now and then so that you don't look like your simply quoting your notes. Physical and vocal aspects are also accommodated in this chapter giving pointers like use hand gestures and enunciate properly, use eye contact and articulate your speech.

Chapter 8: This chapter gives the reader a full outline on how to make a research plan and goes really in depth. In my honest opinion, there were no details missed and everything was thought of carefully. However, the part where they tell you that social media is a good information hub, I feel like it goes both ways because such things can be fabricated without the reader wanting to dig into the subject. The most important take away from the chapter for me is to use credible sources for your information, which helps immensely when trying to prove a point.

Chapter 10: This chapter definitely hits home for me. Nervousness really does prevent me from taking a step at times when it comes to social activities. After reading through, it may seem like a tough task to accomplish but heavy preparation will help you in the long run especially the visual cues that will aid you along with your presentation. Gestures seem like a good thing as well because giving a presentation while you're stiff gives the audience negative vibes.

All in all, these two chapters give me an idea on how to prep myself for the many works to come. The toughest part will be trying to speak as loudly as I can without using repeatable words like uh and um.

- Jonathan Saelee

In Chapter 8 of our textbook, "Seiler's: Communications: Making Connections, 10ed", the author goes in depth on how to use supporting materials and information as resources to further strengthen our speech. The author suggests this to further strengthen our knowledge on the subject, evidence to support our ideas and most importantly, make our ideas clear and relevant to our audience. By doing so, our speeches will have more driving force towards the goal we plan to accomplish with the speech; the speech will hold more weight resulting in a more persuasive speech. The author suggests resources such as the internet, social media as well as our selves, the author explains, "Most communication begins with you. You are one of the most valuable sources of
available information.", I believe this to be a very powerful tool, for the audience will find it easier to relate since it is through a personal experience.

In Chapter 10 of our textbook, the author explains speech anxiety and methods to coping. For someone who struggles with public speaking and general anxiety, this chapter in particular hits close to home. As the author explained, everyone deals with anxiety when giving a speech, the anxiety can actually be channeled into something positive, however, for some people the anxiety usually works against that. The author goes on to explain that the more we understand the source of the anxiety and speech apprehension, the better we can find ways to manage it. Some ways the author suggests is simply exposure therapy, the more we face our fears and attack the issue head on the better we will be at managing it the next time. The author also suggests meditation as a form of treatment, however, personally, I feel exposure therapy is much more efficient since we can deal with the problem from its roots. In chapter 10, the author also briefly touch bases with different speeches such as a manuscript, memorized and extemporaneous speeches, as well as the vocal and physical aspects of public speaking. My biggest takeaway from this chapter is from the physical aspect of presenting a speech, I notice as a get nervous I lose track of how poor my posture is and by doing so this causes our bodies to not perform at its peak capabilities. This can cause a raised heartrate and disrupt our breathing, both detrimental to giving a strong speech.

In charcter 10, the author say communication apprehension can be seen in individuals who either consciously or subconsciously decide to remain silent. They perceive their silence offers them greater advantages than speaking out or that the disadvantages of communicating outweigh any potential gains.
Most successful people will tell you that before they were successful, they had some failures and moments of embarrassment.

Effective communication conveys the speaker's purpose and point of view in a clear and interesting way, so that the audience can pay attention to and retain the speaker's intention. A poorly developed speech can be improved by effective speech, while a well written speech will be destroyed by ineffective speech.
In impromptu speech, the speaker uses carefully prepared and researched speech, but the speech is carried out through notes, with a high degree of spontaneity. Impromptu speech is one of the most commonly used methods in speech class and other public places. The advantage of ad hoc delivery is that it allows you to control your presentation better than improvisation. Personal appearance - the appearance of the speaker and the way the speaker dresses, dresses, and shows himself to others - is a very important consideration.

Within chapter 8 the topic of discussion is how to use outside sources to uphold your argument and put depth into your speech. The more evidence the better, and the more well versed you are on the subject you're discussing, the better. This helps your argument come off as concise, as well as convincing.

Chapter 10 talks about how to deal with anxiety that comes from public speaking, and explains why it happens in order to then be able to face it. I believe that the only way to really help public speaking anxiety is to do it, because once you do you get more used to it, as well as better at it, and then it doesn't seem as daunting.

Chapter eight first talks about different ways of brainstorming topics. The book first talks about identifying a topic that matches your interests and qualifications, then talks about how to brainstorm topics for speeches. It also talks about other ways of getting topics using the current media or social media. Chapter eight also explains the different types of speeches like informative, persuasive and entertainment speeches. Thesis and what it does is also mentioned. Overall chapter eight explains the basis of speeches and what you need to do to connect with your listeners. I find everything that they said useful as I saw myself use a couple of things that they said. From chapter eight, I can take what they said about the listeners point of view along with key audience information. It's important that I take into account how old my listeners are so I can connect with them while doing the speech.

Chapter ten talks about organizing your speech. It first talks about how to develop the main points, and how to develop an effective thesis statement along with your conclusion. Chapter ten also talks about how to support the main points, how to transition to another topic, how to gain attention from your audience. I also find chapter 10 of the book extremely useful and it tells you everything you need to develop your speech correctly. They also give examples which are also useful. What I can take from chapter 10 is how to outline my speech better because the examples that they show are very detailed so I can take how they did it and try to model it just like the book.

With both, informative and persuasive speech due soon, I can use most things that I read from the book.
Brandon Le - Spring 2023

Section 8 was about getting information. It is good to have research to prepare you to write or speak on something. It is essential to have data to direct your paper all the information. Part 10 was a good guide to help set up the show.

In Chapter 8 of the textbook "Seiler: Communication: Building Connections, 10th Edition," the author primarily discusses how to gather and utilize information. The author provides specific steps to illustrate how a good speech is formed. This chapter provides clear guidance for students. After determining the topic of the speech, we can collect information from five directions, which are the internet, social media, interviews, libraries, and research proposals. However, it is important to note that the source of information must be reliable and truthful. On this point, the author provides clear methods for verifying and identifying sources. By doing so, we can provide more persuasive content for our speech. Furthermore, the author believes that personal experience is the best example. Including our own experiences in our speech can make it easier for the audience to connect with us and resonate with our message, and it also allows us to infuse our speech with emotion. This is really useful because a successful speech can give the audience a sense of strength and belief.

Later, the author teaches us how to properly use the collected information. The author provides four types of materials that can support and clarify our ideas, such as testimony, examples, definitions, and statistical data. This teaches me how to write a speech that is more powerful, persuasive, and truthful.

                                                      shuting gao
