It took several months for students to complete the project; we had several volunteers to guide students in the process, and eventually students gave a final presentation in front of our entire school & parents, based off of their research.

Working in a center based program with kiddos that have learning and behavioral challenges, we focus a lot on being "Safe, Respectful, & Responsible". One of the many ways we do this is by Video Modeling. Indeed there are videos already created and available for free use online, but our newest thought is to create our own within our school, using our own staff and student body. When the environment and "actors" in the videos are familiar to the students, it will help reinforce the concepts we are trying to instill in them.

This year I tried to link my Labquest data collecting devices with my Chromebooks (not very successfully - still working on the tech part). MY AP Chemistry students were given the task of testing a client's water for "hardness". They had to present their findings and research in a client report created collaboratively in google docs. This project allowed the students to see how a company might service its clients in the real world.

I love this idea and I think it is would be a great way for my students to share what they have learned about a topic. I really like the idea of taking it a little further and having more than one person work on a comic or peer reviewing a comic before it becomes a video. The videos could be used as study aids for the rest of the class and shared with parents.

I think that one of the most important thing we can do to help our students engage in the 21st century learning environment is to teach them to be good consumers on Youtube etc. To recognize when the informational in a video is worthwhile and when it's junk. To learn to look for authentic sources and credentials. Youtube is a dangerous tool and students are automatically drawn to it--to share their own videos and to consume the videos of their peers. The key is helping them to do this safely.
