Three formative assessment choices:

1. Formative assessment needs to match what you want your students to do
2. Formative assessment needs to be evaluated so instruction can actually be planned - needs to uncover nuance of what readers and writers do everyday
3. Formative assessments shouldn’t take up too much instructional time

Why would you use each:

1.You need to be able to accurately compare your assessment to the task, and if they do not match, you cannot get an accurate representation.
2. I would use this choice because i need to know where my students stand, by knowing this i will be able to plan things around what needs to be taught and where i should start in my instruction.
3. Instructional time is already limited in the classroom. Teachers have a lot of information to get through in a year, and if they’re spending too much time assessing, they are not getting the most out of their teaching time. While assessing is important, it should not take more time then teaching.

This is different from other classes where I learned about informative assessments because it goes into more depth on assessments and talks about them and what they should being doing for students. In other classes I was just learning about the makeup of a formative assessment. (Brenna)

Serravallo's description of formative assessment is pretty similar to what I have heard in other classes. What is different is her idea of not doing assessments if you do not have time or interest to do them. In my other classes, it was really pushed to do assessments constantly. I like Serravallo's take on it. (Delaney)

3 formative assessments

1. Exit Card/Ticket- this would be used to help us as the teacher see what the student has learned from the lesson/their take away. Students will be instructed to write down 3 things that they learned, 2 things they thought were interesting, and 1 question they might still have. It will help us to see if the student fully understood what was taught and if there is anything we need to review to help them get a deeper understanding.
2. Mini Discussion- for this type of formative assessment students will talk with a small group of peers about what they learned/took away from the lesson. As the teacher, we will walk around and monitor and listen to the discussions that the students are having. This will help us as teachers see what they learned and will give us an idea of what we need to touch up on to help them also get a deeper understanding.
3. Thumbs up, middle or down- for this formative assessment students will be asked how well they understood what has been taught. If they got a full grasp on the information they put there thumbs up, if they are not really sure they put their thumbs in the middle, and if they have no idea, thumbs down.
