The zarza is the perfect symbol that represents what I want to become, the light that shines even in the darkest times. Of course, lots of times I feel helpless, watching how the world is in a state of desperation produces an air of deception that can obscure the energy. When I see the kind of awakening videos we saw in class, I feel guilty. Still, I always try to remind myself about how with small actions, I can change the environment that surrounds me; with tiny steps, I can create a more significant step, and also I try my best not to turn away.

For me, it is not only a symbol but also a lifestyle. When you grow up as a Pacha you learn to be selfless and empathetic and to stay away from indifference and numbness. I believe the burning bush represents the light that never shuts down, and that's exactly what I want to be. I'm going to try not to feel helpless anymore because I believe that small actions can make a change: a smile, a wink, or a simple laugh can change a person's day. Anger is what I´ve felt with myself when it comes to watching how people around the world suffer and "I can´t do something to change it". Well, even though I actually can´t make everyone´s life perfect from a day to another, somehow I´ve seen how small actions lead to greater changes. The vision I have about myself and the power of my actions and my words have changed drastically. Yet, it´s not possible to know how every single person feels and lives, but that doesn´t mean I shouldn´t care about others at all. It would make me ignorant not caring about people being kicked out of their jobs, people being killed and kids being abused, among many other conflicts that are constantly seen. By getting informed about what´s going on around me and knowing there´s something wrong, is a great start. Why? Because somehow, by trying to be the best version of myself, I know I have the power to make others feel empowered to do the same. I haven´t been a Pacha since I was little, but since I was introduced to the school´s ideals and values, I felt in my heart as if I always belonged here. The zarza was a big deal to everyone, mostly in 5th grade, the year I became a student in CSFR, and during this (almost) 6 years, I´ve discovered this flaming bush that has always lived in me. I think it’s a reminder to be a nice and kind human being in the middle of situations that make us lose patience, common sense, empathy, tolerance, among others. For example, when we surround ourselves with "luxuries" or material things, having so much makes us forget that not all people are that fortunate, and we start to judge or feel superior. The desire for power has blinded humanity, but I think that by little steps and small actions we can change the world.

It shows us that being a kind person and doing what you can to help others is way better than not doing anything. I think the school has taught us a very important value: Always try to take care of others and take actions to change the world, as small as it appears to be. It is important for us to take care of ourselves, but also we need to realize that we are that small percentage of the world that is privileged. Thus, it is important to remember that our task is to help those we can. For me the Burning Bush is something that I will keep persistently in my life and will always have it in mind and in my heart. However, any element of christianity, specially the zarza, reminds me that life is rather simple: be the best person you can be at any given time, regardless of your situation. Although the zarza is a wonderful metaphor that reminds us of being light to others, I believe it also reminds us of the light we hold ourselves and the extent to which it can grow. In the last few years I've realized it takes confidence to intervene in the situations we care about. When you are little its difficult to understand or appreciate what its real meaning is, but somehow, in a community as ours it grows up in you. Pachas is a school that cares about their students and their personal growth. We are taught how to feel empathy, how to care about others, and most important, how to be the change we want to see in the world. We are taught how to be “light” for the world. The burning bush is a flame that is inside you, a flame that somehow guides you through your life, actions and decisions. Living up to the philosophy of the burning bush we realize that every small action counts. Maybe you can’t change the world, but you can change a person’s life. I have learned to be kind, to be grateful for everything I have and to give back. Just because people have privileges it doesn’t mean they should be ignorant to other realities. While some people are starving, suffering, or even dying, there are other who are to busy living in their “bubbles” to realize it. The burning bush taught me how to stop being ignorant, to feel others pain, to want to change things and do so.  I think all of this is something that is already part of me, it doesn’t ends with the ceremony or even when I graduate school.  This flame is inside me forever.

In a place where there are so many people, we feel as there is no one else but, besides our differences, we are all human beings. Nowadays we forget about others because we have become indifferent to the pain and joy of the ones around us. "Standing and staring" has become part of our indifference and we do not longer care for our society, our own country or even our world. This is why the burning bush has such a powerful meaning to us as Pachas. We have been thought since we were little, to care for the ones around us and helping others has become an important part of our personal lives. Now that we have been in quarantine we understand that relationships are important and that we need each other. I just hope that once we are able to go back to "normal" life we start to live WITH each other and not against once and others.
