 About the author
 Charles Dickens was the most popular writer of the Victorian age. He was born near Portsmouth, England in 1812 and died in Kent in1870. When he was young, his father was sent to the debtor’s prison. He had to leave school and work in a shoe polish factory. He worked as a reporter before starting his career as a fiction writer in 1833. Some of his famous works are Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Hard Times.
Book summary
On Christmas Eve, four ghosts teach Scrooge, an elderly miser, that love and friendship are much important than wealth. The first ghost is that of Marley, his former business partner, who warns him about the suffering awaiting him if he does not change. The three other ghosts reveal to Scrooge scenes by taking him to his past, present and future. A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843, is the most popular of all his Christmas stories.
Chapter summary
Chapter 1
Scrooge is a cold, hard man who loves money more than people. For him, the worst part of the year is Christmas, a time in which even the poor make merry. This Christmas Eve, after rejecting his nephew’s invitation to Christmas dinner, scrooge is visited by two kind gentlemen who are collecting money for the poor. Not only does he refuse to give the many, he also suggests that poor people should be kept in prisons and workhouses. After dinner, he receives another visit, that of his long dead partner, Marley, who warns that his miserly behaviour will make he him suffer for eternity, unless he follows the advice of three ghosts that will come to see him very soon.
Chapter 2
The first ghost, the ghost of Christmas past, shows him scenes from his life as a schoolboy and young man. We learn that he had a lonely and sad childhood, but won the heart of a lovely woman whom he lost through his greater love for money.
Chapter 3
The second ghost, the ghost of Christmas present, shows Scrooge that people can spend a happy Christmas day even without much money. He shows him Fred, his nephew, and bob, his employee, enjoying Christmas with their families. However, the ghost shows him two sad sights: that of bob’s ailing son and that of two other children who represent all the poor and ignorant children in the world.
Chapter 4
The third ghost, the ghost of Christmas future, shows Scrooge scenes after his death. Everybody is happy that he has died. Only the Cratchit family is very sad, their son tiny Tim has passed away. It is then than Scrooge begs the ghost to let him change such a horrible future.
Chapter 5
When Scrooge wakes up after the visits have ended, he realizes it is only Christmas morning. He orders a large goose to be sent to the Cratchits, promises to help the poor and dines at his nephew’s house. Scrooge, now a changed man, becomes a second father to Tiny Tim, who, fortunately, does not die young.

Moral of the story-
Its moral, which still applies today, is that a change of heart is needed among those who are well-off regarding the less fortunate, and that there is no better season for it to take place than Christmas.

Mary Poppins: P.L. Travers
 P.L Travers (1899- 1996) was a drama critic, travel essayist, reviewer, lecturer, and the creator of Mary Poppins. Travers wrote eight Mary Poppins altogether, including Mary Poppins (1935), Mary Poppins comes back (1935), Mary Poppins opens the door (1943), Mary Poppins in the park (1952). She wrote several children’s books as well adult books, but it is for the character of Mary Poppins that she is best remembered.

Book summary
Mary Poppins is a magical nanny who brings a family together through whimsical imagination. Mary Poppins comes to the Banks’s household just as Jane and Michael, the eldest of the Bank’s children, has ran off, causing a flustered Katie Nanna to quit!

Mary Poppins is hired to take care of Jane and Michael along with their infant siblings, the twins John and Barbara. She leads the children through a series of adventures with her friend Bert the chimney sweep.
In the most touching chapters of the book, the children are taught the importance of keeping their eyes and hearts open to the others when Mary shows them the bird woman, who sits at the steps of St. Paul’s feeding the birds. Mary Poppins takes the children to Christmas shopping. The children watch Mary Poppins eyes as she glazes over the shop windows. She becomes staple in their lives and they don’t want to lose her. By this time, George banks has learned to be more accepting of his children’s childishness and to get involved in their games. Unfortunately for the children, and the parents, Mary Poppins leaves in the next chapter when the wind changes from the East to West. But Jane, Michael, John and Barbara will always remember their favourite nanny.

Moral of the story
Mary Poppins is a story that focuses on the importance of being a child while you have a chance.  R. J. Palacio lives in New York with her husband, two dogs and two sons. Book summary
Wonder is a story about a boy named August (everyone calls him Auggie) who had a cleft palate. He had 27 surgeries from when he was born. He was home schooled because children could not help taking a second look at him. But his father said he has to go to a proper school . So, he went to Beecher prep, there, Mr Tushman, there principal, asked three students Charlotte, Jack Will and Julian to show August around the school. Student’s behaviour there was like, if you touch Auggie, you will die. A girl called Summer felt bad for him, so she sat with him on his lunch table. Everyone played a game called Plague that if you touch august and not wash your hands before 30 seconds, you die. Everyone played the game except Jack and Summer. One of his sister, Via’s friend, Miranda, gave him an astronaut helmet that he wore for two years. She called him Major Tom and knew him since he was born. Hers and Via’s friendship was broken when she dyed her hair pink but after sometime they were friends again. Julian started writing mean notes to August and Jack like: You are Hideous. You’re so ugly you should wear a mask every day and you are a freak.
And the last one: I bet your mother wishes you’d never born. Do everyone a favour – and die. August and Jack also wrote notes but their notes were funny like: Julian, you are so hot, Summer doesn’t like you, but I want to have your babies , smell my armpits , love , Beulah . Summer and Jack had shown Mr Tushman the notes before Auggie could read them. Julian was suspended for two weeks so he can’t go to the nature retreat trip with his class. August had problem hearing so he got hearing aids. During the trip, he lost his hearing aids. Julian was greatly affected by the story his grandmother told about Tourteau, he apologized to August and was a changed boy.

Moral

 E. Nesbit was born in 1858, named Edith, although her family called her Daisy. Her father died when she was 4 years old. In addition, one of Edith’s sisters, Mary, was ill of Tuberculosis. The family spent several years moving around to try to improve her health and, as a result, Edith spent large parts of her childhood at boarding school or staying with relatives. She was a teenager when her family came to England and settled in Kent. She published forty books for children and co-wrote many more with other writers. The Railway Children was published in 1906 and has never been out of print since. Having been a heavy smoker all through her life, she died of lung cancer in 1924.

Book summary
Roberta (everyone calls her Bobbie) Peter and Phyllis had a wonderful time at their home in London. Their mother was very good at writing poems and stories and their father was very good at fixing their toys and making new ones. One night, two gentlemen came and took away their father. They became poor and had to go to the countryside to live with their mother. She supported the family with writing stories and sending them to magazines. There was a railway that become their favourite spot. They ran out of coal, so Peter started stealing coal from the railway. The station master caught him red handed. There was a train called the Green Dragon, in which a gentleman sat that they waved to everyday to send love to their father.
It was Bobbie’s birthday, they made a cake with the map of the railway. Phyllis gave her a needle book she made herself and peter gave half of his engine. She thought of mending it and give it to Peter on his birthday. They helped a Russian who had lost his wife and child. They saved the train from an accident by waving six little red flannel flags and in reward they got a gold watch and chain. The watch had a blue leather case. They gave perks, the porter a party to. Bobbie saw in a magazine that her father was in prison. She was in horror. A boy named Jim got his leg broken and they saved him. In thy end their father came back to the family on a train.

Moral of the story
We should be kind, humble and truthful. Instead of taking care of him, they made his life miserable by feeding him properly and making him sleep on bare floorboards.
After living with horrendous aunts for 3 years, James met a mysterious little man. As said in the book, ‘just behind him, James heard a rustling of leaves, and he turned around and saw an old man in a crazy dark- green suit emerging from the bushes. The old man hobbled a step or two nearer, and then he put a hand into the pocket of his jacket and took out a small white paper bag.’ The bag was full of ‘green little things’ said to be magic by the man. He promised James that if he drinks the beans with water at just the right time, he would get rid of his aunts. But James, dizzy with joy, drops the bag on the ground, the bean get sucked into the ground around the old peach tree and the magic is lost. Would things never go right for James?
But then he saw it. A giant peach hanging from the old tree. When his greedy aunts saw it, all they could think was that how the remarkable peach will make them rich. But James knew that something very strange is about to happen soon.
With his friends consisting of centipedes, spiders, silkworms, glow worms and grasshoppers, James heads for a lengthy and thrilling adventure with seagulls, cloud men, sharks and a giant peach landing on the spike of The Empire States Building in New York. The peach resembling the transport of hope and New York City as the city of joy and happiness, this book is a must read for children who have bigdreams of exciting adventures.
