This is the story of the unbelievable, epic, unforgettable first day of 3rd grade- that no one believes me about. Yesterday, I, Sally, was going to my first day of 3rd grade. Well, I was supposed to. The day started out fine. I woke up and had blueberry pancakes with my little brother Ben (he had chocolate chip). After breakfast, my mom, Ben and I got on the 1 to head uptown to school. We dropped Ben off at school first and then traveled to my school, Roosevelt Elementary. When we got there, there was a swarm of people: running kids and their parents chasing them, crying students not wanting to leave mom, and lots of teachers. After a few minutes of searching, we finally saw my teacher Mrs. Macy. Mom kissed me goodbye, gave me a big hug and left. I started walking over to my teacher, when all of the sudden...

My eyes opened in a way they never had before. It felt almost like a ritualistic moment, and I tried to understand what was happening. There was a sound—a flickering metallic rhythm, like a newspaper press humming below the surface of the playground. I felt this rhythm flowing through me. In front of me stood a group of young gir-lions, playing pattycake together. Their paws moved in sync with the flickering, unstoppable rhythm. I was standing still, but then my feet started moving on their own—tapping, playing pattycake with the ground. The sounds vibrated through my ears as the lions softly roared around me.

My teacher turned around, and I saw her face for the first time—she looked exactly like my mother, Mary. I immediately shouted, and my mother ran back to me, even more surprised. The teacher was speechless, and my mom called her mother, my grandma, whose name, surprisingly, is also Macy. No one had classes in the 3rd grade that day. We found out they were twins, and my teacher was actually my missing aunt. It was such an incredible day for all of us!

I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. A girl was standing off to the side, holding something in her hands. At first, I couldn’t tell what it was, but as I got closer, I realized—she was holding a lizard! A real, live lizard! I was so curious that I forgot all about walking toward Mrs. Macy. Instead, I walked right over to the girl. "Is that your pet?" I asked. The girl grinned and nodded, "Yeah! His name is Baby." She held him out so I could get a better look.I couldn’t help but smile. "That’s so cool!" I told her. "I’m Sally, by the way." "I'm Carol," she said, "Do you want to hold him?" I had never held a lizard before, but something about Carol made me trust her. We spent the next few minutes talking about Baby, and by the time the bell rang, it felt like we had known each other forever. Carol and I were in the same class, and from that day on, we were inseparable. And that was the reason my first day of 3rd grade was unforgettable. I had made my best friend!

I pulled my glasses out of my backpack. I had stored them away when the eggs started dropping from above. I couldn’t risk cracking my brand new lenses again. These were a brand new pair and I could not let my optometrist know how irresponsible I truly was. Imagine slaving away all day over an identical pair of lenses for the third time? Anyway…without my glasses, I was sure these were goose eggs! But, as I moved closer to them, I could see they weren’t goose eggs at all. From a tiny crack along the surface of the smallest eggs in the bunch emerged a dark green, slimy, scaly tail! I pulled at the surrounding eggshell to free this mysterious creature, it tried its best to free itself but wasn’t strong enough. As I pulled away the last piece of shell emerged a…

I did not think much of it and I was excited to get to class since it was the first day of school and I knew we would have a party. Suddenly, dozens of armed men in all black uniforms quickly climbed into the room, shouting at us to stand back and get down. The room erupted into screams and panic from all of the students, but the men paid us little attention as they moved swiftly in the direction of our teacher, Mrs. Macy. Without hesitation, Mrs. Macy made a beeline for the door and threw it open, yelling out “You really thought you could take me down that easily?” before disappearing down the hall.

I heard sobbing, louder than anything I had heard before, voicing their apprehension to leave their parents. I looked over to my left and saw a group of girls playing hopscotch. One girl, in braided pigtails, had fallen. She was on the ground, clutching her knee, which had a huge scrape and was bleeding. The other girls around her were laughing for a moment, then turned back and started to play. It seemed like they didn’t care at all that she was hurt. I walked over and offered her a hand up. I asked her if she was OK. She sniffled. I told her my name was Ava and that was my first day at the new school. She introduced herself as well and it turns out her name was also Ava. We talked for a few minutes and it turned out we both had the same favorite color: yellow, the same favorite animal: frogs, and the same favorite dinner: mac & cheese. I suddenly felt a lot less nervous about school with Ava by my side. Glad that I took a moment to check on her. I could tell this was the beginning of a beautiful new friendship.
