I quickly realized how appropriate this title was. Bernstein is a phenomenal composer, who is best known for his works in West Side Story. As a musician, his name was familiar to me, so I excited to hear this piece. There are many parts to this piece: The Prologue, the Seven Ages, and the Seven Stages. In the program notes, each part is marked with its tempo and stylistic marker, such as, poco meno mosso and poco più vivace. It was very interesting to hear such a wide range of compositions within one piece. The pianist, being the main attention of the night, had some in intriguing rhythms and patterns. At one point I was sure he was reading 5 lines at a time. I had never experienced such drastic playing. What was the most notable about the part of the piano was that there did not seem to be a certain set of rules of it. He created his own tempo, which the conductor followed. He never seemed to be in the key signature for more than 2 notes, every other note seemed to be an accidental. Some parts were so melodic, and suddenly the “Anxiety” would show and all musical components were gone and he was doing his own thing.
