Erikson's first stage of psychosocial development happens from birth to 18 months. In this stage, a baby learns who they can and can not trust by who cares for them, nurtures them, and loves them. If a child is not loved and cared for, they will likely be untrusting and fearful of the world.

Erikson's second stage of psychosocial development happens between 2 to 3 years of age. In this stage, a toddler learns that new skills can make them more independent. If they do not learn these skills, they could feel shame or doubt. Potty training is a good example. Toddlers learn they can earn a prize and have more independence from diaper changes. If they don't learn how to properly use the potty, they could feel shameful that they still need to wear a diaper.

Erikson's eighth, and final, stage occurs from age 65 until death. In this stage, people begin looking back on their life and either feel proud of how they lived or that they wasted their life. Depending on how each stage before this built their life, would depend on how this stage would go. If someone was cared for and loved in infancy, had a good sense of autonomy, took initiative, were confident and had a good sense of independence, and felt they lived a productive life, they would likely have a high level of integrity.
