Post #1 (March 9, 2020): Darkness in Italy due to Coronavirus

This article focuses on the drastic precautions Italy is taking due to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus. Prime minister Giuseppe Conte made the decision to put the country on lockdown, which is affecting 60 million in an attempt to contain the virus. He quotes, “we must all give up something for the sake of Italy”. In addition, Italians will be demanded to be kept in isolation (staying home) and only permitted to travel only for essential work, health reasons, and/or other emergencies. This drastic measurement is being taken seriously as law enforcement officials will give a fine and prison time to those who do not have authorization to leave their homes.
This article exemplifies the effects of economic globalization that we have learned in class. Due to this pandemic, Italy will face a decline in their economy due to loss of tourism, increased unemployment, debt, and business closures. Not only will this affect Italy but more so the world. The global economy could fall back into a recession if drastic precautions of the illness spreading is taken. In just a span of two weeks the global stock market has lost 30% of its value. This could put the economic world stagnate as more nations are preventing travel, work, and slow down of manufacturing.
Article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/italy-extends-coronavirus-lockdown-to-entire-country-imposing-restrictions-on-60-million-people/2020/03/09/baa10058-6248-11ea-8a8e-5c5336b32760_story.html

Post #2 (February 26, 2020): Fire Explosion Causes Poor Air Quality For The Community

This article focuses on the fire explosion at one of the largest refineries on the West Coast located in Carson. The Los Angeles County’s South Bay and Harbor areas are known to have numerous refineries and a history of accidents. Considering there have been at least three accidents since 2012, there has also been a raised concern for the communities living alongside these areas. According to the article, more than 180,000 people living within 3 miles from the Carson refinery are not able to escape the health damages it causes. From this course, we have learned communities who are generally in poverty suffer the consequences of climate change and air pollution before it starts to affect wealthier communities. Individuals from poor communities who experience low air quality on a daily basis cause an accelerated aging of lungs, diseases (asthma/ bronchitis/ cancer), and a shorter life span. From a macro level, these factories release large amounts of toxins creating environmental degradation. We have learned climate change plays a role when it comes to globalization because the more our societies become industrialized the more health issues and hauling of natural resources. All aspects of globalization have a ripple effect in which one issue can cause all the others to be damaged. From an economic standpoint, this explosion led to gas prices rising. These circumstances are not only seen locally but throughout the world. Article:https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-02-26/carson-refinery-fire-nearly-contained-as-crews-get-a-handle-on-blaze%3f_amp=true

Post #3 (November 13, 2019): Are we coming close to a Utopian Future?

This article focuses on the new technology innovation of autonomous delivery service, allowing millions of people to receive their groceries without having to leave their home. The goal for this service is to prevent auto accidents occurring heavily in Houston. The article states more than 600 people die from Houston-area roads, making it one of the nation’s deadliest major metro areas. This new innovation is questionable for some individuals since we have not seen robots take on our daily errands. However, it could be a path to a utopian future like we have seen on The Jetsons cartoon show.

In this course we have learned technology has become a vital force in the modern form of business in globalization. The advancement in technology has led for developed nations to also succeed in different aspects such as culturally, economically, and reforming structures of society. This also concerns me to those countries who are unable to advance as quickly due to the lack of resources. Over the last decade, there has been a large increase in technology as we are now experiencing self-driving cars and is just the start to a utopian or dystopian future. This could potentially change the diversity in societies to adapt what we know is the McWorld.

Article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/11/07/future-autonomous-delivery-may-be-unfolding-an-unlikely-place-suburban-houston/

Post #4 (March 17, 2020): Immigration During a Pandemic

President Trump has always expressed his opinion about immigration and is known to repeatedly say to “build a wall” as a way to prevent from Latin Americans entering the United States. On that premise, the Trump administration has decided to take its most aggressive attempt by banning anyone crossing illegally and those seeking asylum. As the coronavirus continues to spread, his administration believes it would protect ones in the U.S., considering Mexico and Venezuela have made the lowest efforts to reduce the virus in North/ South America. According to the article, about 60,000 asylum seekers were denied entrance and an estimation of 851,000 arrests were made forcing them to go back to poverty and violence.

From class, we have examined there is no globalization without human migration. Migration allows people to offer their labor, investments, trade, and seek more opportunities unavailable in their countries. It will be interesting if we will see an economic crisis with this plan since our society relies on immigrants to complete jobs most citizens are not willing to do. Also I could predict a large number of deaths in Latin countries since they have not taken precautions ahead of time and since their healthcare is not as advanced.

Article:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/trump-mulls-sending-all-who-cross-border-illegally-to-mexico/2020/03/17/92bbd012-68ac-11ea-b199-3a9799c54512_story.html
