In Unit 2, I dove deeper into the exploration of acting wqithin a scene using practices like movenet, voice, improv, disecting a scene, and breath work. Within the development of BU21, 3 Sisters, The Seagull, and Terrorism, ive found connection within my morning classes. I felt that especially in this unit i incorpetated more my practices while i was rehersing which ultimately led to a final product that i was proud to perform in front of others.

Improv with Jen

In improv with Jen we studied about how impov was an exchange, one where it is a cycle of listening and responding to your scene partner. This is crutial to impov bc if thuis isnt impliued the scene wont make sence,m or will be too chaotic. But if done right magic can happen. During the process of BU21, and 3 Sisters rehersals, and performances is when i implied improiv the most. There were even times before i got memorized when i would improv the entire scene, or entrance. Most of my character interactions in3 sisters were improved every single rehersal ans were diffrent every time which allowed for something new and exciting for my scene partner to respond to, and from there we used what worked.

Movement in Acting and performance is not only taught as an exercise to help the actor move and react comfortably and with intention, flow, and meaning. But, I believe it is a practice of discipline. Actors should be flexible and have a strong core, being able to hold their own. It’s important for the actor to develop skills in moving with fluidity because it allows for realism within the performance. I used my movement practices especially in 3 sisters while playing Olga. While the sisters were in their element having dinner I felt it necessary to portray a relaxed and comfortable environment, so I displayed that using my body language. Montage was also taught in movement, I found this useful in BU21 I used the learning in montage specifically for my entrance into the scene.

Voice with Jen focused this unit on the anatomy of the actors body. Jen showed diagrams of exactly where the diaphragm was located and we also spoke about our ribs, lungs, organs, etc. The Diaphragm is a part of the body in which actors can breathe into to use for protection. Jen recently also began to cover IPA- which is the International Phonetic Alphabet. This is useful when studying an unfamiliar dialect. More specifically the Irish dialect which we began to cover in class sessions. Jens teaching helped me in the most recent rehearsals for The Seagull. My character Nina has an internal monologue which must be projected for people to hear but in a way that is still relaxed and naturalistic, and I had to use my diaphragm breathing for rehearsals.

In the Monday Lectures Anka covered many things but mainly highlighted camera work within performance. I learned how using different forms of media through film and audio may enhance and excite a performance. Adding something contemporary, current, and exciting such as different audios, someone holding a mic, and filming subtle reactions in the actors hands and mouth my bring the actors performance to a whole new level. In The Seagull and Terrorism, my fellow actors and I are placing a camera on less noticed places to enhance the reaction. For example, filming our feet in the fire fighter scene, or placing the camera from a low angle in The Seagull.

For the Rehearsal of The Seagull, my scene partner and I decided to strategically place the camera in front of us, as our back faces away from the audience, this projection of us is also going to double as a “mirror” we imagined the scene begins after Nina comes back from dinner and she is taking her makeup off and getting ready for bed. She looks into the “mirror while taking her makeup off and reciting her and internal monologue. When Konstantine comes in he is very upset. Nina also uses her reflection as a way to calm her self down, to stay collected. The reflection will also show the audience as Nina is a dramatic actress and loves to put on a show, and to have people watch. As well as konstsatine wants constant reassurance from an audience.
