"Nothing is more painful to the human mind than, after the feelings have been worked up by a quick succession of events, the dead calmness of inaction and certainty which follows and deprives the soul both of hope and fear. Justine died, she rested and I was alive. The blood flowed freely in my veins, but a weight of despair and remorse pressed on my heart which nothing could remove." pg 85

Why does the tone change?

The tone is constantly changing because the event that has happened was so traumatizing. Not only did one of his siblings die, somebody else is thrown in jail even tho Victor knows that the monster killed him. One can only imagine how he feels knowing that his own creation is going after everyone he cares about. His emotions are going to be all over because of everything that is weighing down on him right now. It gives Victor a completely different outlook during the rest of the story. Now he knows what the monster can do and what he is trying to do. He wants the monster dead even though he was so proud of his creation. Now he is in an enraged state and is even more unstable.
