I send out a parent questionnaire at the beginning of the school year to help me get to know my students from their parents perspective. When I am frustrated with a student, I love going back and reading something positive a parent wrote about them. It helps keep me focused on their assets and appreciate them as someone's precious treasure.

Colors of Us

We read the book "Colors of Us" which is about a young girl who notices that her friends all have different "colors". Her mom is an artist and shows her that all of the skin colors can be mixed from the same four base colors: red, yellow, black, and white. The point being that we might all look different but we actually have a lot in common. Then, we tried it out. I gave the kids the four paint colors and they mixed them to get their own personal color. We literally held the paint next to their hands to test - it does work!! but takes time. Anyway, we painted an entire sheet of paper and let it dry over night. Then we traced and cut out hands to make a wreath that now hangs with our I am poems and will go on our door the rest of the year. The kids LOVED it!!
-Kristina L.
