There is a distinction between a fixed mindset – when we attribute our success to abilities and qualities we are born with - and growth mindset – when we attribute our success to hard work and the belief that we can develop new abilities.

Therefore, we could infer that a fixed mindset sees our abilities as stones which make out a path whereas the growth mindset views our abilities as plants that, when watered and looked after, grow into healthy and beautiful plants. In other words, we decide how we pave out our path.

So, how can one cultivate a growth mindset?
• by reality-checking your assumptions 
• understanding people around you care about what you do and how you do

You find yourself taking classes, listening to others – even if you do not want to - and doing lots of work. Why not use these moments to seek opportunities to help you grow as a person?

Brianna Smrke, who received a perfect 45-point score for her IB Diploma some years ago used an analogy which has stuck with many – instead of using the escalator, take the stairs. It will be much harder, but you will see and do much more.

Your attitude towards your learning will determine if the following year is to be filled with meaning and growth. Listen to your head and to your heart. What interests you? What do you enjoy doing? Where do you see yourself in a few months or years’ time?
